NORFOLK, Va. – Jalynda Salley led all players with 17 points to lead the Coppin State women's basketball team to its second-straight win, a 54-51 victory at MEAC rival Norfolk State Saturday afternoon at Joseph Echols Memorial Hall.

How It Happened
First Quarter
- Coppin got out to an inauspicious start as Norfolk scored the game's first seven points and it wasn't until the 6:49 mark where Maraiyah Smith put the Eagles on the board with a layup.
- Brooke Fields and Kaiya Coleman then hit back-to-back three's giving Coppin an 8-7 lead with 4:55 to go.
- Norfolk went back on top with a layup but Jalynda Salley answered with back-to-back buckets inside, and with 1:32 remaining, Fields followed with a layup to put CSU on top, 14-9.
- A pair of NSU free throws cut the lead to three points but Coleman hit a triple to give the Eagles a 17-11 lead.
Second Quarter
- Brooke Fields opened the quarter with a layup and Chance Graham hit a three with 9:14 left, giving Coppin its largest lead at 22-11.
- Norfolk battled back and went on a 12-4 run to close the period as the Eagles went into the half with a 26-23 advantage.
Third Quarter
- Jalynda Salley opened the second half with a layup but the Spartans went on a 10-0 run over the next 4:03 to go back on top 33-28 with just over five minutes to go.
- The teams traded baskets the remainder of the frame until Brooke Fields ended the period with a three, cutting Norfolk's advantage to 40-39 after three quarters.
Fourth Quarter
- Maraiyah Smith tied the score at 44 with a three at the 7:05 mark and Jalynda Salley finished inside tying the score at 46 with 3:21 remaining.
- Norfolk's Khadedra Coker made 1-of-2 layups with 3:03 left but Salley converted on a three-point play the old-fashioned way to give CSU a 49-47 lead at 2:39.
- Salley's finish sparked a 7-0 run and gave the Eagles a 53-47 advantage with 43 ticks left.
- The Spartans cut the lead to four but Brooke Fields made a free throw with 22 seconds to go.
- A technical foul was called on the Eagles with 13 seconds remaining and the Spartans made it a 54-51 ballgame but Kaiya Coleman forced a turnover and was immediately foul to seal Coppin's victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Jalynda Salley led all players and three Eagles in double figures with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting to go with six rebounds. Brooke Fields added 15 points and five assists while Kaiya Coleman reached double digits for the fifth-straight game with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
- Maraiyah Smith also had eight points and four assists.
- Chance Graham was held to three points and five rebounds in the low scoring affair and moved into a tie for 14th place in CSU history with 1,005 career points.
- Coppin narrowly outshot Norfolk State, 38.2% to 37.0% and made seven 3-pointers compared to just two for the Spartans.
