Softball Wraps up Central Arkansas Tournament with Pair of Losses

CONWAY, Ark. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday in the final day of the University of Central Arkansas' Adam Brown Memorial Shamrock Classic.  The Eagles fell to Southeast Missouri State, 11-5 in the morning before a 10-2 defeat against Louisiana Monroe in the nightcap.

How it Happened (vs. Southeast Missouri State)
  • Southeast Missouri State got out to a 90 lead with seven runs in the first and two runs in the second but Coppin battled back with two runs in its half of the second.
  • Nia Bowe led off the inning with a single and got to third on Cloe Ochoa's double.  Soraya Valdez-Frick drove in Bowe with a sacrifice fly and Ochoa scored as Brissa Alvarado reached on an error.
  • After the Redhawks got one of those runs back in the third, Alvarado held SEMO scoreless the next two innings.
  • CSU scored three in the fifth to pull within 10-5.  After Jaylene Sierra walked and advanced on a single by Patricia Soria, Cayla Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Ochoa singled in Sierra, Valdez-Frick singled in Soria, and Alvarado walked to bring in Brown.

How it Happened (vs. Louisiana Monroe)
  • Coppin got out to a 1-0 lead in its first at bat as Patricia Soria scored from third on a passed ball.  Soria advanced to third after doubling to lead off the game followed by a single by Desiree Carrizosa.
  • Louisiana Monroe got the run back in its half of the inning and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the second.
  • The Eagles tied it back up in the third on an RBI single by Cayla Brown to score Soria who doubled for the second time of the game.
  • ULM put a four spot on the board in its half of the third to take a 6-2 lead and added another two in the fourth.  Two more runs came across in the fifth to seal the win.
