Softball Swept at Towson in Doubleheader

TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at Towson University on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Softball Stadium.  The Tigers blanked the Eagles, 12-0 in game one before taking the nightcap, 15-0.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 0, Towson 12

How it Happened (Game 1)
  • Coppin got a base hit from Desiree Carrizosa in the first but she was stranded before Towson scored four times off starting pitcher Lexi Flom in its half of the frame.
  • Soraya Valdez-Frick recorded a two-out hit for CSU but the Eagles could not capitalize, but Flom tossed a scoreless second to keep Coppin in the game.
  • In the third, once again the Navy & Gold got a hit, this time from Alexis Genovese but the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the third, extending their lead to 11-0.
  • Maren Bernal relieved Flom with one out in the third and then allowed just one run in the fourth.  Bernal also drew a walk with two outs in the fourth and was the last base runner for Coppin.

How it Happened (Game 2)
  • Coppin went down in order in the first and the Tigers got a two-run home run in their half of the frame to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Cayla Brown led off the CSU second with a walk but Towson got three straight outs to get out of the inning.
  • After Towson led off the bottom half with a single, starting pitcher Jaylene Sierra made a great play on the rubber, catching a line drive and doubling up the runner at first.
  • Towson tacked on three more in the third to take a 5-0 lead, and Coppin left Brown stranded in the fourth after she singled with two outs.
  • The Tigers added ten runs on nine hits, two errors and a few mental defensive miscues to put the run rule into effect.
  • Nicole Ullman recorded a one-out double to the gap in left center and was stranded at third to end the game.
Inside the Numbers (Game 2)
  • Cayla Brown recorded a base hit and drew a walk while Nicole Ullman went 1-for-2 with a double.
  • Jaylene Sierra was credited with 11 earned runs in 3.1 innings before Brissa Alvarado relieved her.  Alvarado retired just one batter and gave up two runs on three hits before Ariana Ramirez made her CSU debut and got out of the inning allowing just one hit.

  • Coppin will be back at it on Wednesday, March 20 when it travels to face UMBC in a 2 pm doubleheader.
