Charlotte Takes Down Baseball in Rubber Game of Three-Game Series

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coppin State's baseball team fell at Charlotte, 14-4, in the rubber game of a three-game series at Hayes Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 4, Charlotte 14
  • Records: Coppin State (6-5), Charlotte (8-7)
  • Location: Charlotte, N.C. (Hayes Stadium)
  • Series History: Charlotte Leads, 6-1

How It Happened
  • Both teams went down in order in the first but Charlotte put a three spot on the board off starting pitcher Aaron Rea in the second.  The 49ers put together four hits in the inning with back-to-back doubles driving in runs.
  • Coppin finally got to Charlotte pitcher Carson Pinkey in the fourth as Erik Crossman drove in a run with a single.  Scoring on the play was Nazier McIlwain who singled and got to third on Justin Banks' single.
  • Charlotte got the run back in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead but Matt Day hit his second home run of the series in the fifth, cutting the deficit in half at 4-2.
  • Three hits led to two 49ers runs in the fifth and that would do it for Rea on the mound.
  • Charlotte scored two more in the sixth off Jonathan Rice but Coppin got one of the runs back in the seventh thanks in large part to back-to-back singles by Crossman and Carlos Alviarez to start the inning.
  • The 49ers got three more runs in the seventh off Matt Urban to take an 11-3 lead and added two more off relief pitcher Corey Treyes in the eighth.
  • CSU fought for a run in the ninth as Crossman reached on a fielder's choice and scored after a single by Alviarez and a wild pitch.

Inside the Numbers
  • Erik Crossman and Carlos Alviarez had multi-hit games to lead the Eagles offensively.
  • Aaron Rea allowed six runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings while striking out four.
  • Jonathan Rice gave up a pair of runs in his lone inning while Matt Urban struggled, giving up three runs on three hits and a walk.  Corey Treyes retired all three batters in the seventh but allowed three runs on four hits before Anthony Martinez retired the final two 49ers.
