Baseball Falls at Georgetown in Final Non-Conference Game Before MEAC Play

BETHESDA, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team fell at Georgetown University, 14-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field.
 
The Basics
  • Final Score: Coppin State 5, Georgetown 14

How It Happened
  • Coppin got off to a favorable start, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. Corey Treyes led off the game with a walk before advancing to third on a single by Ryan McWilliamsNazier McIlwain drove in Treyes with an RBI groundout and Justin Banks grounded out as well which allowed McWilliams to score as well.
  • Georgetown however put a six spot on the board in its half of the inning off starting pitcher Carter Harbut.
  • Both teams went down in order in the second with Lucas Richards taking over for Harbut on the mound for the Eagles.
  • McIlwain delivered with another RBI groundout in the third to score Treyes who had doubled to start the frame before reaching third on another single by McWilliams.
  • The Hoyas extended their lead to 10-3 with four runs in the third.
  • After a scoreless fourth, Daniel Alvarez replaced Richards on the hill and allowed a pair of run to make it a 12-3 score.
  • Both teams scored a run in the sixth with Treyes continuing his great day with an RBI single to score Carlos Alviarez.
  • GU was able to add another run in the seventh but Matt Day slugged his third home run of the season for Coppin in the eighth to finish the scoring on the day.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Corey Treyes had a perfect day at the plate, going 2-of-2 with two runs, an RBI and a pair of walks.  Ryan McWilliams was the other Eagles player to have a two-hit game.
  • Nazier McIlwain, Erik Crossman, Matt Day and Cole Gerula all had base knocks   CSU.
  • Carter Harbut took the loss for Coppin, allowing six earned runs in an inning of work. 
  • Ryan McWilliams made his pitching debut and tossed a scoreless inning. 
  • Lucas Richards pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs while fanning two.
  • Daniel Alvarez gave up three runs while striking out two in one-plus innings and Bradley Tuttle permitted just a run in two innings of relief.
  • The Eagles already have eight home runs this season which surpasses their total from all of last season. Day and Justin Banks have three each.
Up Next: Coppin opens MEAC play against Maryland Eastern Shore at Joe Cannon Stadium on March 15-17. Friday's game starts at 3 pm, followed by a 2 pm first pitch on Saturday.  Sunday's game is slated for 1 pm.
