Men’s Hoops Goes Cold Against Delaware State on Senior Night

BALTIMORE – Despite a game-high 26 points and five 3-pointers by Lamar Morgan, the Coppin State men's basketball team fell to Delaware State, 70-60, on Monday night at PEC Arena.

How It Happened
 
First Half
  • Coppin got out to an 8-2 lead as Chad Andrews-Fulton got the scoring started with a layup, followed by a pair of deep three's by Lamar Morgan at the 17:16 mark.
  • Dejuan Clayton increased the advantage to 11-4 with a three of his own with 14:31 left but Delaware State clawed back with a 15-6 run to take a 19-17 lead with 5:32 remaining.
  • After a couple ties in the final minutes, the Hornets buried a three with 1:30 to go to go up 28-25 and Morgan made a free throw in the final seconds to make a 28-26 DSU lead at the break.
Second Half
  • Five-straight points by the Hornets gave them a 33-26 lead but Coppin scored seven-straight, with Lamar Morgan tallying five points, to tie the score at 33 with 15:52 remaining.
  • Delaware State responded with two-straight buckets and increased its lead to as many as 11 points.
  • Five points apiece by Morgan and Ibn Williams helped Coppin pull to within 61-57 with 3:46 to go but four-straight DSU points combined with poor shooting by Coppin allowed the Hornets to earn the victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Lamar Morgan led all players with 26 points on 6-of-12 shooting while making 5-of-10 from distance and 9-of-12 from the free throw line.  Seventeen of his points came in the second half and he also led Coppin with seven rebounds.
  • The rest of the team combined to shoot 9-of-39 (23.1%) from the floor with Kent Auslander scoring eight points and the duo of Dejuan Clayton and Ibn Williams adding seven points apiece.
  • Kevin Larkin led DSU with 16 points and 18 rebounds while Jonathan Mitchell added 15. 
  • Delaware State outshot Coppin, 40.3% to 29.4%.
Who's Next?
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to MEAC rival Norfolk State for a 6:30 pm start.
