NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's
Miajavon Coleman and
Ashley Roman were named to the First Team All-MEAC Volleyball Team, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
Brianna Lang was selected to the Second Team while Roman and
Paola Caten earned All-Rookie Team recognition as the Eagles led the conference with four different players being named to All-MEAC squads.
A sophomore from San Antonio, Texas, Coleman is earned All-MEAC honors for the second-straight season after receiving Rookie of the Year and Second Team accolades last year. Coleman leads the Eagles with 385 kills (3.67 per set) and 427.5 points (4.07 per set) which both rank second in the MEAC. Coleman is also second on the team with 209 digs (1.99 per set) while sitting third with 25 service aces and fifth with 33 blocks.
In her second collegiate season, Coleman notched nine double-doubles, recording at least 20 kills in three different matches, including a season-high 24 in a win at Florida A&M. Coleman also had 23 kills in the home opener against Siena and another 21 against Fairleigh Dickinson. In a five-set victory at UMBC, Coleman tallied a career-high 16 digs while record 12 kills. Her best all-around game arguably was against North Carolina A&T where she tallied a double-double 19 kills and 12 digs along with a season-high four blocks to go with a pair of aces.
Coleman's 385 kills and 3.67 per set this season are both the fifth-most in CSU single-season history. Coleman already ranks fourth in school-history with 800 career kills.
Roman was voted as the top libero in the conference as her 453 digs and 4.27 digs per set both ranked second in the MEAC. A native of Isabela, Puerto Rico, Roman increased her production to 4.50 digs per set. Roman was also credited with 89 assists and 20 service aces on the season.
Recording at least 20 digs in six matches this season, including a season-high 30 in the home opener against Siena, Roman also owns season-highs of eight assists against Maryland Eastern Shore and two aces which she served up six times. Roman had tallied double-digit digs in 17 matches to date and her 453 digs are 18 shy of the CSU single-season record.
With a team-high 889 assists (8.63 per set), Lang earned All-MEAC accolades after being named to the All-Rookie Team last season. A sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., Lang ranked second in the MEAC in assists and she was even better in league play, averaging 10.18 assists per set. Lang also led the Eagles with 47 services aces and her 0.62 aces per set in conference games were also second in the conference. Roman was also credited with 172 digs, to rank third on the Eagles, and 21 blocks.
Lang quarterbacked the offense to a league-best .248 hitting percentage and 12.75 kills per set and collected at least 50 assists in matches against Howard and North Carolina Central. Her 889 assists are the fourth-most in CSU single-season history and her 1,922 assists are the third-most in school-history.
A freshman from Tampa, Fla., Caten came on strong during conference season and finished the year with 114 kills and a .184 hitting percentage. Caten also was second on the team with 33 aces, fourth with 148 digs and added 15 blocks. Recording four double-doubles on the season, Caten had a season-high 20 kills to go with ten digs against Howard. Before moving to the front row fulltime, Caten tallied a season-high 16 digs at Florida A&M and a school-record seven aces in a four-set victory over Maryland Eastern Shore.
Caten's 0.53 aces per set in league play was the third-most in the MEAC.
Coppin State (12-17, 8-7 MEAC) enters this weekend's MEAC Tournament at Howard University as the No. 3 seed in the Northern Division. The Eagles' eight conference victories matches a school-record and they will face North Carolina Central at 11 am on Friday, November 22 in the First Round of the MEAC Tournament.
