BLACKSBURG, Va. – Coppin State's volleyball team closed out the Hokie Invitational with a hard-fought four-set loss to host Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
The Eagles dropped the match, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16, 25-21, and now stand at 1-2 on the season.
 
Deviana Walker led Coppin offensively with 10 kills while Nia Curry added eight kills and Cherisse Atilano recorded seven. Pamela De Jesus Tejedor also chipped in six kills for the Eagles.
 
Coco Figueroa put together another strong defensive performance, recording a match-high 20 digs, while Karina Diaz added 11 and setter Eva Rovello finished with nine digs and 27 assists.
 
Rovello also made an impact from the service line with two aces, while Atilano, Figueroa, Curry and Diaz added an ace apiece. Kayden Cupid led Coppin at the net with four blocks as the Eagles totaled six team blocks.
 
Virginia Tech held a .268 to .086 advantage in hitting percentage and recorded 59 kills compared to Coppin's 36. The Eagles held a 6-1 advantage in service aces and also recorded more digs, 60-54.
 
CSU returns to action at Navy's Kristen Dickmann Invitational on September 4-5.  The Eagles open against the host Midshipmen on Friday at 6:00 pm on ESPN+ before taking on Penn (11am) and Stony Brook (7pm) on Saturday.
