Women’s Hoops Drops Second Straight to Open Season

Box Score CATONSVILLE, Md. – The Coppin State women's basketball team shot just 32.1% from the field and committed 21 turnovers in a 71-48 loss at UMBC Wednesday night at UMBC Event Center.

First Quarter
  • Chance Graham scored eight points in the opening quarter, moving up a spot on the CSU all-time scoring charts to keep Coppin close after the first quarter, 15-14.
  • The Eagles trailed, 5-0 after the first 2:23, but E'Mya Price hit a three and Graham scored seven-straight for CSU to close within 11-10.
  • UMBC increased the lead back to five but Graham hit 1-of-2 free throws and Marley Grenway buried a three with just under a minute left.
Second Quarter
  • UMBC opened the period on a 8-0 run to go up 23-14 but baskets by Graham and Oluwadamilola Oloyede cut the lead to seven at the media timeout.
  • The Retrievers scored out of the break before Grenway hit another three and Graham sank a jumper to pull within 27-23 with 58 ticks left. 
  • A bucket by UMBC on the ensuing possession made it a 29-23 score at the half.
Third Quarter
  • Aliyah Lawson sparked an early run out of the half with a nifty driving layup and a three to cut the score to 29-28 with 9:14 remaining, but the Eagles then went cold.
  • UMBC went on a 20-0 run over the five-and-half minutes to make it a 49-28 score at the 3:41 mark.
  • Jalynda Salley, Alexandria Hamilton and Oloyede scored three-straight baskets to pull Coppin within 49-34 with 2:27 remaining but that was as close as the Eagles got the remainder of the game.
Fourth Quarter
  • Coppin was outscored, 19-12 and shot just 3-of-16 from the floor (18.8%) in the final quarter with Lawson leading the Eagles with six points and Tyree Allen chipped in with five points during the quarter.
Inside the Numbers
  • Chance Graham scored a team-high 12 points while grabbing five rebounds and blocking a pair of shots.  She moved past Jackie Johnson-Stewart for 12th place on the CSU all-time scoring list with 1,036 points and inched closer to the school rebounding record with 904 in her career.  She needs just five more rebounds to pass Rene' Doctor's 24-year-old record of 908.
  • Aliyah Lawson had her best game of the young season with 11 points, a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
  • Marley Grenway once again hit a pair of threes for six points while Tyree Allen scored five.
  • Jalynda Salley went for four points and five rebounds and both E'Mya Price and Alexandria Hamilton dished out a pair of assists.  Hamilton also had five rebounds.
 
Up Next: Coppin is back in action on Friday, November 15 for its home opener against Saint Peter's at 11 am.  The Public Schools Youth Day Game is sold out and several elected officials, dignitaries and 2020 Baltimore Mayoral candidates are expected to be in attendance.
