TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Behind 24 kills from
Miajavon Coleman, the Coppin State volleyball team defeated Florida A&M for the first time in program-history, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-23, 25-18) on Friday night at the Lawson Center.
The Basics

First Set
- Miajavon Coleman got Coppin out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of kills, but Florida A&M responded with seven-straight points to go up, 7-2.
- The Eagles did not panic, however, and after the teams traded points, CSU went on an 8-0 run to take a 11-9 lead.
- FAMU tied the set up at 11-11, but CSU got kills from Coleman and Christa Johnson to get a two-point advantage.
- After a Rattlers point, Coppin scored another five-straight, but the hosts did not go away, and used a late 4-0 run to cut Coppin's lead to 21-18.
- Kills by Sydney Hicks and Jordan Celestine gave the Eagles a 23-18 advantage and a kill by Coleman sealed the first set at 25-21.
Second Set
- The second set was back-and-forth early on but Florida A&M began to pull away with a 5-1 run to take a 13-8 lead.
- Coppin got no closer than three points the rest of the way as the Rattlers took the frame, 25-19.
Third Set
- In a series of runs, Coppin responded from a 7-5 deficit to take a 9-7 lead.
- Florida A&M then scored six-straight to force a timeout before Coppin stopped the bleeding by forcing a Rattlers error at 13-10.
- CSU used a 3-0 later in the frame to tie the score at 18-18 with kills by Christa Johnson and Sydney Hicks.
- Back-to-back kills by Hicks after a FAMU point gave CSU a 20-19 lead and forced a timeout.
- The hosts regained the lead at 23-22 to force a Coppin timeout and the Eagles got three-straight kills from Miajavon Coleman to win the set, 25-23.
Fourth Set
- Coppin got out to an early 5-1 lead but Florida A&M clawed back into it to tie the score at 10-10.
- CSU scored five of the next seven points to force a timeout and the hosts responded to tie the score at 18-18.
- The Eagles closed out the match with seven-straight points to take the frame, 25-18 and defeat their MEAC South rivals for the first time.
Inside the Numbers
- This is Coppin's first-ever victory against Florida A&M in 15 meetings during the regular season.
- Miajavon Coleman led three Coppin players with double digit kills with 24 while swinging an impressive .313 for the match. Coleman added a pair of aces and eight digs.
- Sydney Hicks also had a hot hand with 12 kills on 31 swings (.258) while Jordan Celestine added another ten kills on a .333 hitting percentage.
- Christa Johnson chipped in with seven kills and a team-high three blocks.
- Brianna Lang notched a double-double with 45 assists and 11 kills as the Eagles hit .248 for the match.
- In the back row, Ashley Roman was credited with a match-high 24 digs while Paola Caten recorded a season-high 16. DeMia Goddard also had eight digs.
