Eagles Struggle Against Greyhounds, Lose In 3

BALTIMORE, Md.Coppin State's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at crosstown rival Loyola Maryland (25-7, 25-10, 25-19) on Wednesday night on Forbes Court at Reitz Arena.

The Basics

How It Happened

First Set
  • Loyola got out to a quick 4-0 start before Coppin got on the board after a Greyhounds attack error.
  • After a kill by Stennis made the score, 6-2, in favor of the hosts, the teams traded points before Loyola went on an 8-0 run to put the set out of reach.
  • The Greyhounds hit a whopping .481 to win the set, 25-7, while holding CSU to a -.059 hitting percentage
 
Second Set
  • The teams played even early on, but after a Loyola attack error tied the score at five, the Greyhounds went on a 9-0 run before a service error stopped the bleeding.
  • LU continued its hot-hitting with a .345 hitting percentage to take the set, 25-10, as CSU continued to struggle, hitting -.130 for the set.
 
Third Set
  • The trio of Lauryn Harrell (4), Brianna Lang (2) and Christa Johnson kept CSU close throughout the set, combining for eight of the team's ten kills.
  • Despite hitting .240 for the set, CSU could not contain Loyola which hit .565 for the frame.
  • The Greyhounds closed out the match with four-straight points
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Coppin hit just .012 for the match compared to .456 for the Greyhounds who were paced by Ann Ernst's 11 kills on 15 swings
  • Lauryn Harrell led CSU with five kills, while Miajavon Coleman finished with four.  Brianna Lang and Christa Johnson had three kills apiece.
  • Chelsie Kolibar had a team-high six digs while Lang and Asia Stennis were credited with five digs.
 
Who's Next?
  • Coppin travels north to Smithfield, Rhode Island, to compete at Bryant University's Hampton Inn-vitational on September 7-8.  The Eagles will take on Quinnipiac on Friday at 6 pm, followed by the host Bulldogs and Middle Tennessee the following afternoon at 12 and 3 o'clock, respectively.
