Volleyball Swept by Quinnipiac in Opener of Bryant’s Hampton Inn-vitational

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Coppin State's volleyball team dropped its first match of the Hampton Inn-vitational to Quinnipiac, 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-17) on the campus of Bryant University Friday night.

How It Happened
First Set
  • Marlena Guice put Coppin on top, 1-0 with a kill to start the match but Quinnipiac ran off four straight-points to force a Eagles timeout.
  • The break temporarily helped CSU as it scored the next point and kept its deficit to just two points until the Bobcats went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-8 lead.
  • Following a kill by Christa Johnson, Qunnipiac scored three consecutive points and never looked back, winning the frame, 25-13
  • Quinnipiac hit .321 with just four errors for the set while Coppin recorded as many errors as it did kills (7).
Second Set
  • The Bobcats got out to a 3-1 lead before CSU tallied four-straight and took a 6-3 lead to force a timeout.
  • Quinnipiac battled back to tie the score at six, one of 15 tied scores during the set as the lead stayed at a single point by either team for most of the frame.
  • A kill by Lauryn Harrell gave Coppin an 18-17 lead but Quinnipiac then tallied five-straight to go up, 22-18.
  • The Eagles scored three of the next four to cut the deficit in half but the Bobcats shut the door with a pair of kills to take the set, 25-21.
  • CSU recorded ten kills and just five errors to narrowly outhit QU, .217 to .194
Third Set
  • Quinnipiac scored the first four points with a pair of aces which led Head Coach Tim Walsh to call a timeout.
  • The Bobcats scored the next point following the break but Coppin battled back, cutting the deficit to 7-5 following back-to-back kills by Harrell and Miajavon Coleman.
  • That would be as close as the Navy & Gold would get as Quinnipiac took the decider, 25-17.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Freshman Miajavon Coleman led the Eagles with eight kills and also recorded a block and an ace to finish with 9.5 points.
  • Classmate Lauryn Harrell hit an impressive .444 with five kills with just one error on nine swings while Asia Stennis matched her with five kills as well.
  • Brianna Lang recorded 17 kills and matched Chelsie Kolibar with a team-high six digs.
  • Coppin was outhit, .293 to .114 as the Bobcats had a balanced attack with five players finishing with five to eight kills.

  • Coppin State concludes its trip with matches at Bryant and against Middle Tennessee at 12 pm and 3 pm, respectively.
