Coppin State Drops Match To Howard In Four

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin volleyball was unable to break through against a stout Howard squad as it fell in four tightly-contested sets. The Eagles kept the first two sets close, getting the job done in the third, but ran out of gas in the end.
 
The Basics

How It Happened
First Set
  • Howard jumped on the young Eagles early, blasting four kills in a 6-1 opening run.
  • Coppin answered back with a vengeance, using three service aces and two Miajavon Coleman kills to knot the score at nine.
  • HU continuously tried to pull away from CSU, but the scrappy Lady Eagles relentlessly fight back.
  • After Coppin took a 21-19 lead, Howard found its second gear, reeling off six unanswered points to complete a wild 25-21 first set.
  • The set involved seven ties and four lead changes as the squads were evenly matched.
Second Set
  • Coppin State flipped the script on Howard to start the second set, flying to a 15-9 advantage halfway through.
  • Howard showed why its been the class of the MEAC, as the unfazed Bison calmed chipped away at the Coppin lead, eventually tying it up with an ace by Jurnee Farrell at 17-17.  
  • The Eagles were unable to recover from Howard's 8-2 charge, scoring four points the rest of the set for another 25-21 defeat.
  • Miajavon Coleman was the main cog for the Eagles quick start, knocking down three of her four kills during the first half.
  • Howard countered Coleman's production with a two-pronged attack, with Kira Porter and Courtney Dalton combined for nine kills in the comeback.
Third Set
  • The Eagles and Bison followed the same pattern as the first set, with a see-saw battle breaking out in the nation's capital.
  • A staggering 12 ties took place with scores of 3-3, 8-8, and 14-14 were commonplace.
  • Coppin State decided that it was time to gain separation. After a HU service error with the score deadlocked at 17, Coppin took off on an 8-3 surge and completed the third set with a resilient 25-20 win.
  • The duo of Coleman and Asia Stennis put the Lady Eagles on their backs, as they each came up clutch with six kills to keep the Lady Eagles alive.
Fourth Set
  • Coppin State seemed to use all its energy to prolong the match in the third set and was unable to stop the Bison in a lopsided fourth set.
  • Howard put together runs of five, six, and nine unanswered points to send the Eagles home with a 25-8 loss.
  • HU outgunned the Eagles smacking 14 kills while forcing nine errors to put the game out of reach.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Miajavon Coleman has been a star for the Eagles as she picked up her first career double-double, going for 14 kills and a season-high 10 digs.
  • Coleman has tallied double-digit kills in eight of the team's last nine matches, averaging 4.18 kills per set.
  • Asia Stennis finished second on the team in kills (12), marking the seventh time in her past nine matches player where she went over the 10-kill plateau.
  • Chelsie Kolibar paced the squad with 13 digs on the day, her seventh 10-dig performance in ten previous games.
  • Howard kept its top strikers busy as Courtney Dalton (14), Kira Porter (10), and Kailyn Williams (10) all notched double-digit kill totals.
  • HU's setter Tamia Dockery was superb, averaging 9.75 assists per set, while also tying for the team lead in digs (9).
Who's Next?
  • CSU will begin a long seven-game homestand as it brings the rival Morgan State Bears to the PEC. The match will take place on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
