Bears Clip Eagles In Straight Sets

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State fell behind early and often as the Bears smacked 39 kills in the three-set sweep. Coppin struggled to get anything going against Morgan, dropping the Eagles to 1-2 in the MEAC.

How It Happened
First Set
  • MSU landed three quick strikes, two by Cristen Coryatt to jump ahead 3-0.
  • The Lady Bears followed that up by committing three consecutive errors to pull Coppin into a 3-3 tie.
  • Morgan started to turn up the heat on the young Eagles, using a 7-0 surge to take command 15-7.
  • Coppin State would not recover, dropping the first set 25-17.
Second Set
  • Things snowballed for the Lady Eagles after the huge momentum boost for the Bears, falling behind 11-1 from the get-go.
  • Coppin trailed by as much as 14, never posing a threat in a 25-11 lopsided defeat.
  • Morgan State put on a serving clinic converting five of its nine aces in the second set, including three from Kalysia Bates.
Third Set
  • After a disastrous second set, Coppin came out with a chip on its shoulder as it raced to an early 5-0 advantage aided by two Christa Johnson kills.
  • CSU's lead would grow to as much as six, before the Bears fought its way back into the game.
  • After the Lady Eagles built a comfortable 10-4 advantage the PEC crowd was back into it.
  •  Morgan quickly silenced the Eagles faithful with a stunning 12-1 run, to storm ahead 16-11.
  • Due in part to 11 Coppin errors, the Lady Bears rode the momentum of its stunning rally to a 25-18 road victory and a crucial early MEAC statement game.
Inside the Numbers
  • Mistakes were the ultimate undoing for CSU, accounting for nearly as many attack errors (18) as it did kills (23).
  • Asia Stennis paced the Lady Eagles with 8 kills, followed by Miajavon Coleman and Christa Johnson with 4 each.
  •  Marlena Guice finished the night with 10 digs, her third double-digit match of the season. Stennis was second on the team with 9, while Chelsie Kolibar had 6.
  • Cristen Coryatt and Kalysia Bates made the most of their opportunities, amassing 26 of the 39 kills for the Lady Bears, while hitting .289 and .409, respectively.
  • Roi Wallace averaged just over 10 assists per set for Morgan, and Jasmin Hubbard went over the double-digit threshold in digs, totaling 13 against Coppin State.

  • Coppin will take a short break from conference play as it welcomes Rider University to Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. First serve will take place at 2 p.m.
