Eagles Overpower Bulldogs, Cruise To Second Straight Victory

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lady Eagles got contributions from the entire roster as it pulled away from South Carolina State in consecutive sets. It was Coppin's second game in four hours and game two of the Charm City Classic Presented by THB Bagels and Deli.

How It Happened
First Set
  • CSU asserted its dominance early in the contest, pounding seven kills over the first 24 combined points to take a commanding 15-9 advantage.
  • Coppin State would watch its lead swell to as much as 10, before coasting to a 25-17 first set win.
  • Five different Eagles would put a dent in the scorebook led by Miajavon Coleman (4) with Asia Stennis, Lauryn Harrell, Jordan Celestine, and Christa Johnson all notching at least one kill.
  • Coppin distributed the production evenly as well as effectively, hitting an excellent .400 for the first set.
Second Set
  • The Lady Eagles were once again firing on all cylinders from the get-go, as a 7-3 start forced a South Carolina State timeout.
  • CSU continued to pad its wide lead, with the advantage reaching as high as 11 points on two separate occasions.
  • Errors were the Bulldogs biggest enemy in the second set, committing 12 errors which was a critical key in the 25-14 Coppin State rout.
Third Set
  • Coppin cleared the bench in the third set as the Eagles displayed its depth to secure the sweep.
  • Aislynn Weaver picked up two of her team leading three service aces on the night with CSU down 11-12, to help seize momentum and push the Lady Eagles ahead 14-12.
  • Macy Havill was a force off the bench for Coppin State as she blasted a season-high five kills and four digs, all of which came in the final frame.
  • South Carolina State was undermanned with only ten players but came within a point of spoiling the Eagles sweep.
  • Ultimately CSU would earn a 28-26 third set decision after two errors by the Bulldogs sealed the win.
Inside the Numbers
  • Coppin State matched its win total from a season ago, notching its fourth victory in game 16, opposed to recording four wins in 30 total games during the 2017 campaign.
  • The win over South Carolina State was just Coppin State's second win in the series history between the two programs, with the only other  victory coming back in 2005.
  • Jordan Celestine shined for CSU, hitting .636 and striking for seven kills.
  • With 12 more digs against SCSU, Chelsie Kolibar has now recorded double-digit digs in five of her last six matches.
  • Miajavon Coleman has been a one-woman wrecking ball for Coppin, as she racked up another 14 kills on the night, leading the Eagles assault for three of the last four matches, including over 12 kills in four of her last five.
  • South Carolina State was paced by Alexus Holt, who held the team lead in kills (12) and digs (8) on the night, while T'Meyah Burgess and Kyra Marshall both logged double-digit digs for the Bulldogs.
