WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Coppin State volleyball team fell in three sets at George Washington University (25-22, 25-17, 25-17) in the final match of the Dig the District Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center

How It Happened
First Set
- Coppin kept it close early with a pair of kills by Miajavon Coleman and another by Asia Stennis but a 3-0 run gave GW an 8-4 lead and forced a CSU timeout.
- The teams traded points but a kill on an overpass by Christa Johnson and an ace by Brianna Lang cut the deficit to just 9-7.
- GW responded and its cushion fluctuated between three and four points before the Colonials tallied four-straight to take a 16-10 lead and force another timeout.
- The short break revived the Eagles who ran off three-straight with a kill by Stennis along with an ace by Rebekka Hauri.
- Following a pair of GW points, CSU cut it to a single point at 18-17 with another kill by Stennis along with an ace by Chelsie Kolibar.
- That would be as close as the Eagles would get as GW took the frame, 25-22, outhitting CSU .267 to .129.
Second Set
- GW came out strong with three-straight points but Coppin stopped the bleeding with a kill.
- Following two Colonials points, CSU went on a 7-1 run which included a 5-0 run to take an 8-6 lead.
- The Colonials scored the next two but Lauryn Harrell answered with a kill to put CSU back on top 9-8.
- After trading points, GW slowly built up a 16-13 lead to force a timeout before four more points gave it a 20-13 advantage and prompting another timeout.
- Harrell slowly stopped the bleeding with a kill but the Eagles were unable to mount a serious threat the rest of the set.
Third Set
- Coppin got out to a 3-1 lead with a kill by Miajavon Coleman along with a block by Asia Stennis and Christa Johnson but GW came back with five-straight to go on top 6-3.
- The Eagles cut the deficit to within one numerous times but were unable to get over the hump as the Colonials scored three-straight to take a 17-13 lead and force a timeout.
- Jordan Celestine recorded a kill to get a point back but the Buff & Blue scored four-straight to put the match out of reach.
- GW took the frame, 25-17
Inside the Numbers
- Freshman Brianna Lang recorded the first double-double of her career with 27 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Lang also recorded three blocks.
- Asia Stennis recorded a team-high 11 kills as the offense also got contributions by Lauryn Harrell (nine kills) and Miajavon Coleman (six kills). Stennis also finished with eight digs.
- Christa Johnson led CSU with six blocks while Coleman finished with four and Celestine added three.
- Chelsie Kolibar served up three aces to go with seven digs.
- CSU outblocked GW, 9.0 to 8.0.
- GW outhit CSU, .240 to .038 and got 11 kills by Skylar Iott.
Who's Next?
The Eagles will co-host the Charm City Classic Presented by THB Bagels & Deli on September 21-22. Coppin takes North Carolina Central at 2 pm and South Carolina State at 7 pm on Friday followed by North Carolina A&T at 1 pm Saturday afternoon.
