Aces Are Wild! Coppin Serves Up A Win Over Manhattan

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Women's volleyball started slow, but shook off the cobwebs to defeat Manhattan 3-1 after a devastating loss to Lafayette the night before. The Lady Eagles fell behind in the first set 12-3 but stormed all the way back for a 25-23 victory, providing the spark it needed to take down the Jaspers.

How It Happened
First Set
  • Coppin shot itself in the foot early, committing four attack errors and allowing three aces, falling behind quickly 12-3.
  • CSU chipped away at the Jasper lead, before surging ahead late behind a mind-blowing 22-11 run, capping an impressive comeback to win set one 25-23.
  • The Lady Eagles shared the wealth with eight different players recording a dig.
Second Set
  • Miajavon Coleman went to work from the beginning, making a statement with two kills over the first three points.
  • Marlena Guice launched beautiful serves for back-to-back aces (three overall), in a run of seven unanswered points to gain a 15-7 upper hand.
  • Manhattan decided to turn up the heat, causing an Eagles timeout after a 4-1 push to make it 16-11.
  • The Lady Eagles kept the Jaspers at bay, besting out Manhattan 25-19 to take a comfortable series lead.
  • Aces were the key for CSU as they compiled six overall including four different Eagles putting a mark in the scorebook.
Third Set
  • Manhattan College refused to quit, surprising Coppin with an 9-2 surge out the jump, thanks to a sloppy Eagles squad.  
  • Manhattan continued to roll, riding five kills by Kenza Hall and three consecutive service aces by Samantha Wagner to end the set with an easy 25-12 win.
Fourth Set
  • Errors once again reared its ugly head for the Eagles, taking a 6-2 edge before three straight attack errors by Coppin slimmed the margin to one.
  • Errors plagued the Jaspers this time around, botching five consecutive plays to open the window for a 5-0 Coppin run and a 13-7 margin for error.
  • Coppin State would do what it had to, going 15-12 down the stretch to put a stamp on its 25-19 set and 3-1 match victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Coppin set a season-high with 13 service aces. Leading the Eagles was Rebekka Hauri with four, followed by Marlena Guice with three.
  • The Jaspers and Eagles combined for 24 service aces with both clubs setting new season-highs and hope for the rest of the year.
  • Marlena Guice put together her best stat line of the season, striking three aces along with a season-high 11 digs.
  • Miajavon Coleman was the only Eagle to produce double-digit kills, amounting for 11 on the day.
  • Jordan Celestine converted on a .500 percentage, earning four kills and three blocks, both season-highs.
  • Erin Hoener was the Jaspers go-to weapon, pacing Manhattan in blocks (3) and kills (11).
  • Alyssa Rehrer was Manhattan's leading digger, out in front of the Jaspers while putting up 14 digs.
