Missed Opportunities Cost Eagles As It Gets Swept By The Citadel

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Lady Eagles come up empty-handed in the UNC Asheville Invitational, being defeated in three by The Citadel Bulldogs. Coppin had numerous chances to pull ahead but were unable to capitalize.

How It Happened
First Set
  • The Citadel jumped out to an early advantage and was able to hang on for a hard fought 25-20 first set win.
  • The Bulldogs were the beneficiaries of five service aces, including three by Sharlissa De Jesus which helped hold off the charging Eagles.
Second Set
  • Coppin State was bombarded in the second set by a relentless attacking line led by De Jesus and Sumerlyn Carruthers. The two combined to keep the Eagles off-guard enough to take set two 25-20.
Third Set
  • The Lady Eagles came out after the break with more fire as they were able to hang around through the halfway point of the set.
  • CSU pulled within one at 11-10 but a 9-2 run by The Citadel squashed any hopes of a Coppin comeback.
Inside the Numbers
  • Freshman Miajavon Coleman was a one-woman show as she was the offensive focal point of the Lady Eagles with 13 kills and an amazing .688 hitting percentage.
  • Another Freshamn Brianna Lang had a breakout performance as she tallied 28 assists, six digs and a service ace.
  • Rebekka Hauri continued her solid day, building off of her seven digs in the previous match, to record 11 digs in the clash with The Citadel
  • Serving opportunities proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs bombarded the Eagles with 10 service aces (four by De Jesus), coupled with 10 Coppin State service errors to dig an insurmountable hole for CSU to climb out of.
  • Coppin finished the match with a season high .259 hitting percentage with one of the few returning players Christa Johnson providing a .417 percentage.
  • The Citadel saved its best performance for last as it combined for a .500 hitting percentage in the deciding set.
  • Megan Fuhr was an assist machine as she cranked out 30 assists to lead both teams.
Who's Next?
  • Coppin will head to Morgan State on Wednesday to battle the Saint Peter's Peacocks in a neutral site tri-match at 4 p.m.
