Stennis' Double-Double Propels Eagles Past Peacocks For First Victory

BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's women's volleyball team notched its first win of the 2018 campaign Wednesday evening with a relatively painless 3-0 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks. Asia Stennis led the charge for the Eagles as she provided a double-double (17 kills, 12 digs) to overpower a worn-down Peacocks squad that had just finished a five set thriller against Morgan State less than an hour prior.

How It Happened
First Set
  • Coppin gave itself some breathing room with a 6-1 run a third of the way through the first set, causing a SPU timeout at the 14-10 mark.
  • The Peacocks would pull even at 19 apiece as they refused to back down quietly.
  • Led by two kills each from Miajavon Coleman and Sydney Hicks, Coppin State slammed the door on a potential comeback, winning the first set 25-21.
Second Set
  • The second set was dominated early by the Lady Eagles as they raced to a commanding 11-4 lead which they would never relinquish.
  • The turning point came when Saint Peter's pulled to within 4 (14-10) before the star of the match (Asia Stennis) delivered the dagger of three consecutive kills, thus ending the threat.
  • While Saint Peter's managed to tie the game at 23, the Eagles never seemed to be in danger of losing, as Coleman ended it with a vicious kill to settle at 25-23.
Third Set
  • The third set was a seesaw battle which saw SPU hold a lead for most of the first half.
  • Coppin would take a 20-16 advantage before Saint Peter's seized the momentum.
  • Saint Peter's looked poised to extend the game propelled by three straight service aces courtesy of Andrea Lombeyda to place themselves on the verge of a set point 23-21.
  • The Lady Eagles dug deep and showed off its resiliency as they shook off the rough patch by ending the match on a 5-0 run, thus sealing a sweep 25-23.
Inside the Numbers
  • Junior Asia Stennis compiled her fourth career double-double and her first of the 2018 season, surpassing her previous three matches combined finishing with 17 kills compared to 16 over the last three contests.
  • Miajavon Coleman has now recorded double-digit kills in back-to-back games as she finished with 11 kills to go along with a season-high four blocks and a .476 hitting percentage.
  • Rebekka Hauri pushed her double-digit dig streak to two games as she tallied 10 on the day.
  • Brianna Lang had her best performance of her career setting new highs in assists (32), aces (2), and kills (4).
  • Saint Peter's Freshman sensation Alanis Alvarado was held in check, hitting only .267 as well as being held to a season-low five kills.
  • The Peacocks struggled consistently to mount any kind of offensive attack as it posted a .155 percentage
  • The one area where SPU shined bright was blocks, finishing with 12 including three blocks each from Alexus Sharp, Natalia Velez, and Carbonell Torres.

  • Coppin State will head to Pennsylvania on Friday for the Crosstown Invitational hosted by Lehigh and Lafayette. Friday's matches consist of Rutgers (1 p.m.) and Lafayette (7 p.m.), while Saturday will feature Manhattan (1 p.m.) and Lehigh (4 p.m.).
