BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Coppin State baseball team dropped a non-conference game at Lehigh University, 11-7, on Wednesday afternoon at Walker Field. The Eagles fall to 15-19-1 on the year while the Mountain Hawks improve to 16-24.
Senior outfielders
Andres Santana and
Caleb Duhay led the attack for Coppin State as Santana drove in three runs from the leadoff spot and Duhay recorded a team-high three base hits.
Allen Saar also collected a pair of hits while
Drew Thomas drew two walks.
Quinn Gleed took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs on four hits over 4.0 innings of work.
Bradley Tuttle and
Anthony Martinez gave up three runs each over the next three innings before
Delvin McFadden pitched a scoreless eighth.
Coppin jumped out in front with a run in the first as
Carlos Alviarez scored on a wild pitch. Alviarez drew a one-out walk before Duhay singled him over to second. A groundout by
Nazier McIlwain grounded out for the second out but advanced both runners into scoring position.
Lehigh answered with two runs in its half of the first and after both teams went scoreless in the second, the Eagles went back on top, 3-2 with a pair of runs in the third. Alviarez got it started again with a two-out single and got to third on another Duhay single. As Duhay successfully stole second, Alviarez scored to tie the score and McIlwain drove in Duhay with a single up the middle.
Once again, the Mountain Hawks responded with two runs to take a 4-3 lead but a RBI single by Santana in the fourth tied it back up. Lehigh regained a one-run lead after the fourth and the score remained a 5-4 ballgame until the home team scored four runs in the seventh to take a 9-4 advantage.
The Eagles were finally able to put a crooked number on the board in the top of the seventh with three runs on three hits.
Brett Helmbrecht drew a pinch hit walk with the bases loaded to score
Erik Crossman who had doubled earlier and then Santana pulled a single to score both Saar and Thomas.
A pair of runners were left stranded and Lehigh took advantage with a pair of runs in the eighth to go on top by four runs and that sealed the victory.
