GLEN BURNIE, Md. – Jahmon Taylor allowed no earned runs over 8.0 innings while striking out eight as the Coppin State baseball team defeated MEAC rival Delaware State, 4-1, on Saturday night at Bachman Sports Complex. The MEAC North-leading Eagles now stand at 16-19-1 overall and 15-3 in conference play and are four games up in the division with six games left to play.
With the win, head coach
Sherman Reed now has 55 MEAC victories which breaks the Coppin school-record previously held by Jason Booker (1989-97). Reed now has 80 career victories which is three shy of Booker's all-time school-record.
Coppin took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning and that was more than enough for Taylor who scattered seven hits on the day and did not allow a walk.
Andres Santana led off the game for the Eagles with a single and stole second before
Corey Treyes drew a walk. A wild pitched advanced both into scoring position before
Caleb Duhay's RBI groundout put CSU on the board.
Nazier McIlwain then doubled off the wall in right field to score Treyes.
McIlwain helped the Eagles get another two runs in the fourth, leading off the frame with another double, this time off the wall in left field. After a passed ball,
Marcos Castillo doubled to the gap in right center to score easily plate McIlwain and Castillo then scored on a wild pitch to make a 4-0 game.
Delaware State got its lone run in the eighth, taking advantage of a defensive miscue by the Eagles. After a single that somehow got through the right side of the infield and a stolen base, Taylor fanned the next batter and got a groundball for the second out of the inning. A high chopper was then bobbled for an error which ended the shutout bit.
Treyes relieved Taylor for the ninth inning and retired the side for his fifth save of the season.
The Eagles play host to Delaware State at Joe Cannon Stadium on Sunday, April 29 for a 2 pm doubleheader. CSU will honor its five seniors prior to game one and recognize all baseball alumni between games.
