BETHESDA, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a 16-9 decision at Georgetown University on a windy Wednesday afternoon at the Hoyas' Shirley Povich Field. The Eagles' nine runs matched a season-high.
Nazier McIlwain drove in three runs for Coppin while going 2-for-5 with a double and a walk while
Erik Crossman also had a multi-hit effort while also drawing a walk.
Allen Saar reached base safely four times with two walks and also got hit by a pitch twice.
Andres Santana was also walked three times as CSU drew 12 bases on balls on the day.
Georgetown got out to a quick lead and never looked back, scoring three runs in the first and four in the second to take a 7-0 lead after a pair of innings.
The Eagles were able to get something going in the third, scoring four runs on a pair of hits while also drawing three walks. Saar reached safely on a fielder's choice and back-to-back singles by Crossman and McIlwain loaded the bases with one out.
Derek Lohr then drew a free pass to bring in the first run and prompting a pitching change.
With the bases still loaded,
Drew Thomas then drew a walk before
Brett Helmbrecht drove in another with a fielder's choice. Coppin's final run of the frame came on a wild pitch which allowed Lohr to score from third.
Georgetown got two of those runs back in its half of the third and added three more in the fifth to take a commanding 12-4 lead.
The Hoyas add another two runs in the sixth but after
Caleb Duhay pitched a scoreless seventh for the Navy & Gold, Coppin erupted for four runs in the eighth.
Corey Treyes led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Saar drew a walk. A walk issued to Crossman loaded the bases and McIlwain cleared them with a double to the gap in left center. Lohr followed up with a single down the right field line, scoring McIlwain from second and cutting the deficit to 14-8.
Once again, Georgetown was able to get the runs back after Coppin cut into the lead as the Hoyas put a two spot on the scoreboard to increase their lead to 16-8 after eight innings of work.
Coppin was able to score a run in the ninth on a RBI triple by
Marcos Castillo which scored pinch runner
Brandon Watkins, but it was unable to get any more on the board.
Daniel Alvarez took the loss for Coppin, allowing seven runs in an inning of work.
Anthony Martinez had the longest outing for CSU, going 3.0 innings of work while allowing four runs.
Devyan Dyal pitched the fifth and sixth innings while Duhay and
Delvin McFadden closed out the game.
The Eagles open MEAC play on March 17-18 at Maryland Eastern Shore. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 pm before Sunday's 12 pm single game.
