ANNAPOLIS, Md. – One inning did the Coppin State baseball team in as it fell to Navy, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium. The Eagles have dropped three-straight and fall to 1-4-1 while the Midshipmen improve to 6-2.
Coppin got on the board first with a run in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 1-0.
Drew Thomas got the Eagles going with a one-out double to left center and scored just after when
Brett Helmbrecht singled to center field. Navy was able to get out of the jam quickly as it robbed
Corey Treyes of a hit and turned a double play to get out of the frame.
Devin Rivera Ozuna got the call to start on the mound for the Eagles and held the Mids without a hit for the first three innings. However, the Midshipmen were able to get all three of their runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth and that was all they would get the remainder of the game.
Eagles relievers
Bradley Tuttle,
Daniel Alvarez and
Branden Redfern held Navy scoreless from the fifth through eighth inning, allowing just three hits as Coppin recorded a base knock in each of the final five innings.
In the ninth inning, the Eagles were able to get the tying run on base to threaten but were unable to capitalize. With two outs, Helmbrecht recorded his second base hit of the game with a single up the middle and Treyes drew a walk to represent the tying run with
Andres Santana at the plate. With both runners going on first movement, Santana hit a shot up the middle that was stabbed by the pitcher and he was able to throw out Santana at first to seal the victory.
Helmbrecht and
Allen Saar both had multi-hit games for the Eagles while Treyes also reached safely twice with a single and a walk.
Rivera Ozuna took the loss, allowing just three runs on four hits.
On Deck: Coppin will go on the road for a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky on March 2-4. Friday's game starts at 4 pm, followed by a 2 pm and 1 pm first pitch on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
