BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's men's basketball team dropped its final road game of the regular season to crosstown rival Morgan State, 69-56, on Monday night at Hill Field House. The Eagles fall to 5-25 with a 5-10 mark in the MEAC while the Bears improve to 11-17 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Cedric Council notched his first career double-double, leading Coppin with 12 points and ten rebounds.
Karonn Davis and
Taqwain Drummond also finished in double figures as Davis tallied ten points with five assists and Drummond matched his career-high with ten points.
Tre Thomas and
Kent Auslander finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
Morgan State outshot Coppin, 49.1% to 25.9% and made several baskets in transition with
Tiwian Kendley leading all scorers with 27 points.
Phillip Carr had a double-double 12 points and 14 rebounds.
At the 12:02 mark of the first half,
Lucian Brownlee was fouled shooting a three and sunk all of his free throws, giving Coppin a 13-12 lead. That would be the last the Eagles would hold the advantage as Morgan scored 11-straight points before a triple by Auslander with 5:18 remaining.
Kendley responded with a three and made a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to 12 before the Eagles scored five-straight to put the deficit back at seven with the Bears ahead, 28-21 with 2:58 remaining.
The Bears closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to take a 37-23 lead at the break and led by as many as 63-39 with 10:26 left in regulation.
Coppin did not go down without a fight as it scored 12 straight points to cut the lead in half at 63-51 with 5:45 left but it would not get any closer.
The regular season comes to an end for the Eagles when they host Howard University on Thursday, March 1 at 7:30 pm.
