Men’s Hoops Tamed at Home by Tennessee State, 64-55

BALTIMORE – Coppin State dropped a non-conference bout to Tennessee State, 64-55 on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena.

How It Happened
First Half 
  • Both teams started out slow but after a Lamar Morgan three cut a Tennessee State lead to 9-7, the Tigers went on an 11-2 run over the next 2:08 to take its largest lead of the period at 20-9 with 12:36 left.
  • The duo of Cedric Council and Nigel Marshall sparked a surge by the Eagles as Marshall hit a jumper and Council converted on a pair of three-point plays to make it a 22-19 game.
  • After the teams traded jumpers, TSU extended its lead to six and in the closing minutes Coppin's Brendan Medley-Bacon and Tennessee State's Stokley Chaffee exchanged dunks on ensuing possessions as the Tigers took a 33-27 halftime lead.
 
Second Half 
  • Chad Andrews-Fulton used his size to make an easy layup to start the second half and after a TSU jumper, Coppin scored seven-straight which was capped off by a Morgan triple to give CSU its only lead of the game, 36-35 with 17:11 to play.
  • Neither team scored a point for nearly three minutes before TSU regained the lead on a layup by Tripp Davis with 14:44 remaining.
  • The score remained a one-possession game for the next couple minutes but after another three by Morgan cut TSU's lead to just 45-43 with 8:22 left, the Tigers went on a 12-2 run over the next 4:03 to seal the victory.
Inside the Numbers 
  • Lamar Morgan scored a team-high 12 points for Coppin State while Nigel Marshall poured in 11 points with a game-high eight rebounds to go with two assists, two blocks and a steal.
  • Dejuan Clayton and Cedric Council added nine and eight points, respectively as Chad Andrews-Fulton chipped in with four points, a team-high four assists and two blocks.
  • Justin Steers was also efficient for the Eagles, scoring seven points in just ten minutes while making both of his shots from the floor, including a three, as well as 2-of-3 from the line.
  • CSU was outshot, 42.9% to 38.3% and committed 23 turnovers which led to 25 Tigers points.
  • Tennessee State got 18 points from Donte Fitzpatrick-Dorsey and 14 from Emmanuel Egbuta.

  • The Eagles return to the hardwood on Wednesday, December 12 when they make the trip to face UNC Greensboro for a 7 pm tipoff.
