Men’s Hoops Can’t Capitalize in Loss at UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coppin State's men's basketball team grabbed a season-high 40 rebounds but was unable to capitalize as it fell at UNC Greensboro, 77-54 on Wednesday night at Greensboro Coliseum.

How It Happened
First Half 
  • The Eagles held their own early on as the score was tied at 9 with 12:38 to go as Chad Andrews-Fulton scored four early points with three rebounds.
  • Four-straight free throws but UNC Greensboro back on top, starting a 17-4 run over the next 6:39 before Lucian Brownlee got a friendly bounce from three-point range to make the score, 26-16.
  • The Spartans scored the next six points on a pair of three-pointers before Andrews-Fulton hit another two free throws, helping CSU to a 7-2 run to close the gap to 34-23 at the break.
  • Coppin outrebounded UNCG, 23-15 for the period but shot just 27.6% from the floor while the Spartans made 38.5% of its hots with seven 3-pointers on 15 attempts (46.7%)
 
Second Half 
  • UNCG's Demetrious Troy and Coppin's Dejuan Clayton traded buckets to start the second half but after Cedric Council scored with 16:35 left, the Spartans used an 11-2 run to extend its lead to 54-31 with just over 12 minutes left.
  • Coppin got as close 70-54 with 2:15 remaining as Lamar Morgan scored six of his eight points during an 11-3 run capped off by a triple from Taqwain Drummond and a Justin Steers free throw.
Inside the Numbers 
  • Dejuan Clayton led Coppin with 11 points followed by Chad Andrews-Fulton and Lamar Morgan with eight points apiece.
  • Andrews-Fulton led all players with a career-high 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
  • Taqwain Drummond and Justin Steers also had the best games of their career on the boards, pulling down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.  Drummond also pitched in with seven points.
  • Coppin shot nearly 38% from the floor in the second half to finish 32.8% for the game.  The Eagles outrebounded UNC Greensboro, 40-29, but it could only turn its 15 offensive rebounds into seven second-chance points.
  • The Spartans shot 49.1% from the floor while making 9-of-21 (42.9%) from deep and got 17 points apiece from Eric Hamilton and Kaleb Hunter.  Francis Alonso also had 16 points while Isaiah Miller added 12.
Who's Next?
  • Coppin will have nearly a week-and-a-half off until its next game as it travels to take on Louisiana Monroe on Friday, December 21 at 8 pm Eastern Time.  Two days later, the Eagles clash with the University of Houston at 4 pm Eastern on December 23.
