Men’s Hoops Gets Trapped in Richmond’s Spider Web

RICHMOND – Coppin State's men's basketball team trailed from start to finish as it dropped its tenth-straight game to open the season at Richmond, 82-47, on Wednesday night at the Robins Center.

How It Happened:
First Half
  • Richmond's Grant Golden scored the first five points but Coppin closed the gap with buckets by Chad Andrews-Fulton and Nigel Marshall making it an 8-4 game with 15:44 remaining.
  • It was all Spiders from there as they went on an 11-0 run over the next 2:34 to increase their lead to 19-4 with 13:10 to play.
  • Following another layup by Marshall, Richmond scored another ten-straight and CSU was never able to string more than five-straight points together.
  • The Spiders went into the half with a 43-16 lead, shooting 54.8% compared to just 23.3% for CSU.
Second Half
  • Coppin started the second half strong, going on an 11-6 run with all of the Eagles' points coming from the freshman trio of Marshall, Ibn Williams and Justin Steers.
  • After a pair of pretty layups by Steers at the 17:02 and 16:40 marks, Richmond extended its lead by going on a 12-2 run, increasing the advantage to 61-29 with 14:11 left.
  • CSU got no closer than 28 points the remainder of the game.
