Men’s Hoops Outshot by Warhawks at Louisiana Monroe

MONROE, La. – Lamar Morgan led three Eagles in double figures with 19 points but it was not enough as the Coppin State men's basketball team fell at Louisiana Monroe, 80-63 on Friday night at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

How It Happened
First Half 
  • Chad Andrews-Fulton gave Coppin an early 3-0 lead with a trifecta to open the game after grabbing a defensive rebound on the other end.  The senior forward also answered ULM's first bucket to give the Eagles a 5-2 advantage.
  • Back-to-back scores by the Warhawks gave the home team its first lead before Cedric Council and Taqwain Drummond found the bottom of the net which put Coppin on top, 9-8 with 13:30 left.
  • That was CSU's last lead of the game as the Warhawks went on a 16-2 run over the next 5:36 to take a 24-11 lead.
  • Drummond hit two-straight three's to cut the deficit to just seven points with 6:52 remaining but the Warhawks extended the advantage back to 13.
  • CSU climbed back to 36-26 at the half as Andrews-Fulton hit another three and Lamar Morgan buried a couple more to close the half.
 
Second Half 
  • Coppin shot an impressive 16-of-29 (55.2%) from the field in the second half but could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
  • After ULM went up 49-32 with 14:10 left which was its largest lead at the time, Morgan answered with a three, Drummond hit a pair of jumpers and Justin Steers added a free throw to make the score, 49-40 with 11:49 to play.
  • The teams then traded a few baskets and the lead remained stagnant until the closing minutes as the Warhawks ended the game on a 10-5 run.
Inside the Numbers 
  • Lamar Morgan led Coppin State with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting with three 3-pointers and his seven rebounds also tied Justin Steers for a team-high.
  • Steers also came up big offensively with 13 points while making 5-of-8 from the floor. 
  • Taqwain Drummond was the other Eagles player in double figures with a career-high 14 points, sinking 6-of-9 from the field and 2-of-3 from distance.  Drummond also grabbed six rebounds.
  • CSU also got eight points from Chad Andrews-Fulton and seven from Dejuan Clayton.
  • Three Warhawks scored in double figures with Travis Munnings going off for 32 points with eight 3-pointers. 
  • Daishon Smith scored 19 and Michael Ertel added 13 for ULM who outshot Coppin, 50% to 44.8%.  The Warhawks made 15-of-21 from the line compared to just 3-of-7 for CSU. 
Who's Next?
  • Coppin will be right back at it on Sunday afternoon when they travel Westward to face #20 Houston at 4 pm Eastern on December 23.
