Pittsburgh, PA - Coppin volleyball put up a valiant effort on the first day of the Duquesne Invitational but fell to Canisius 3-1 (25-23, 26-28,19-25, 22-25) and Duquesne 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 11-25). Coppin (0-5) was led by
Asia Stennis who recorded a double-double in game one with 15 kills and 11 digs while
Dominique Madarang totaled 59 assists for the day.
MATCH ONE RECAP:
The Eagles were flying high in the first match against Canisius as they jumped to a quick 3-0 lead. Canisius was able to tie the match at 5 apiece, but Coppin was able to regain the lead after a kill by
Marlena Guice. The lead was short lived as Canisius went on a 9-2 run to have the Eagles trailing 8-14.
Coppin continued to chip away at Canisius and pull within 3 after Stennis was able to ace a serve bringing the score 13-16. Coppin then clawed closer as
Angel Jamerson brought the score 16-18. Canisius went on a 5-4 scoring run to pull the score to 20-23.
Coppin would earn its first set win of the season by stringing together the next 5 points. After an attack error by Canisius, Madarang would setup Jamerson for a kill to pull Coppin within one point.
Glorines Rosado would then setup Stennis for a kill to notch the match at 23-23. After a Canisius timeout and then a Canisius attack error, Rosado's service ace would secure the set win for a final score of 25-23.
The Lady Eagles continued to battle Canisius in the second set as Coppin had the lead at 18-12. Canisius would outscore Coppin 10-2 to take a 20-22 lead. Coppin would take the next three points before both teams would tie the score at 24. Both teams would keep a tie at 25 and 26 apiece before Canisius would get two kills to secure the set win.
The third set saw 5 different tied scores with the last one being at 18-18. Coppin could not stop Canisius as they then went on a 7-1 scoring run to take the third set 19-25. The fourth set was just as competitive. This set saw six ties and saw Coppin go on a 6-0 scoring run at one point to bring them to a 17-20 score. Coppin would later manage to hold Canisius at 24 and score three straight points to close the gap to 22-24, but it wasn't enough as a Coppin service error would give Canisius the set and match.
MATCH TWO RECAP:
In the second match, the Lady Eagles took on host Duquesne University and fell 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 11-25). Coppin was led offensively by Stennis who had 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .355.
Coppin challenged Duquense in the first two sets, but the Lady Eagles weren't able to string enough consecutive points to pull ahead. Coppin's best run in the first set came when Coppin scored five consective points which included two kills by Stennis, one by Jamerson, and an ace by Madarang. That run closed the gap to two as Coppin was down 14-16. Duquesne would then go on a 9-3 run to close out the set.
In the second set, Coppin had the lead 11 times, and the match was tied 17 times as Coppin battled Duquesne. With Copin by 20-18 after a Stennis kill from Rosado, Duquesne scored the next four to take a 20-22 lead. Stennis would notch another kill from Madarang to bring the Lady Eagles within one, but it was not enough as Duquesne closed out the set scoring the final three points.

Coppin concludes its second tournament of the year on Saturday, as the Lady Eagles kicks take on Robert Morris. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The team will then at Univ. of Maryland Baltimore County Tuesday at 7pm for a single match and then play in the Georgetown Classic next weekend with three matches slated for Sept. 8 and 9.
