HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State baseball came from behind to win the third and final game of the weekend series with Maryland Eastern Shore with two late runs winning 7-6 on Sunday, April 30
th at Joe Cannon Stadium.
Coppin State moves to 10-27 overall record with a 7-13 MEAC record. Maryland Eastern Shore falls to 10-33 overall with a 7-14 MEAC record.
Freshman
Jacob Lewis (3-4) anchored the Eagles to victory tossing 3.0 innings and holding the Hawks to only one earned run. Lewis was inserted into the lineup after the fifth inning replacing freshman pitcher
Quinn Gleed. Gleed struck out four batters in 3.1 innings taking over for starter freshman
Joshua Hancock. Hancock went 2.2 innings striking out one batter.
Junior
Andres Santana had a season-high four RBI against Maryland Eastern Shore with a pair of hits including his fourth double of the year. Senior
Bryant Miranda went 3-for-3 on Senior Day with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior
Clinton Arnold also had a productive final home game as an Eagle with a pair of hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Arnold singled on a bunt in the first inning but in the second inning Coppin State added on two more hits and took a 1-0 advantage. Miranda led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on an RBI double by Santana. MDES responded with three runs on three hits that went along with two fielding errors by the Eagles in the third inning.
Coppin State trimmed the deficit with a run in the bottom of the third by their senior duo of Miranda and Arnold. Arnold singled up the middle, stole second and third base and was brought in on a single to second base by Miranda.
The Hawks came back and took a 5-2 lead after the fifth inning. The Eagles broke out for three runs on two hits in the bottom of the inning to tie things up at 5-5.
Sophomore
Nazier McIlwain singled to left field and crossed home on a sacrifice fly out by junior
Brett Helmbrecht. Junior
John Bonanca RBI doubled to right center scoring McIlwain and finally Santana sacrifice flew out scoring Miranda for the third run.
With the score tied Coppin State took the lead in the seventh inning in their final home conference game of the 2017 season. Miranda remained hit with a single to right center. Santana fired a two-RBI single down the right field line bringing in Miranda and Helmbrecht.
The Eagles defense held onto a two run lead until the Hawks came up with one run in the top of the ninth inning. Coppin State was fortunate to hold on and win their first game of the series, 7-6 over Maryland Eastern Shore.
