HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State University's baseball team hosted Norfolk State University in a MEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 2
nd at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Spartans won both games 5-3 in game one and 16-2 in game two.
Coppin State falls to 5-16, 4-4 record while Norfolk State moves to 11-13, 6-2 conference record.
Senior
Clinton Arnold finished with two hits, a run scored and an RBI to lead the Eagles at the plate. Arnold had his second triple of the season as the Eagles finished with eight hits and three RBIs in game one.
The Spartans led 1-0 after the third inning and extended their advantage to 3-0 in the fifth inning.
Coppin State's first hits of the weekend series came in the fourth inning behind singles by
Andres Santana and
Nazier McIlwain. Santana singled to center field and then McIlwain singled through the left side.
In the fifth inning,
John Bonanca drew a walk at the leadoff spot and then
Clinton Arnold blasted a triple to right field scoring Bonanca. Shortly after, sophomore
Erik Crossman RBI singled up the middle bringing in Arnold for the second run of the inning. Crossman stole second base and then crossed home plate on a single through the right side by
Jamar Criss.
Other Eagle hits came in the sixth inning with Arnold singling to third base while the final hits occurred in the ninth inning with freshman
Corey Treyes singling up the middle and freshman
Allen Saar doubling down the left field line.
Starting pitcher
Quinn Gleed went 6.0 innings on the mound for the Eagles striking out a pair and walking only one batter. Relief pitcher
Krystian Negron (0-1) tossed the last three innings also striking out two batters.
Norfolk State scored runs in the seventh and ninth innings to put away Coppin State 5-3 in game one.
The Spartans dominated the second game with 15 hits in a 16-2 win over Coppin State.
The Eagles trailed 10-0 by the fifth inning before things got rolling. The Spartans walked freshman
Cole Gerula,
Allen Saar and Arnold to load the bases for Crossman. Crossman reached on a fielder's choice to third base scoring Gerula.
During the next inning, senior
Bryant Miranda hit an RBI sacrifice fly out to left center field scoring Treyes. Treyes led the fifth inning off with a single to shortstop and then advanced to second on a throwing error.
Sophomore pitcher
Aaron Rea (1-4) went 2.0 innings, freshman
Anthony Martinez seen the most action going 3.2 innings striking out three and junior
Delvin McFadden closed things striking out two batters in 1.1 innings.
The teams will meet for a single game slated for Monday, April 3
rd at noon to conclude their three game conference series.
