GLEN BURNIE, Md. – Coppin State baseball won their third non-conference game of the season with a 9-3 home win over Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 19
th at Bachman Park.
Coppin State held a 7-0 advantage through six innings. Mount St. Mary's scored four runs in the seventh and two in the ninth while the Eagles held off the late charge with runs in the seventh and eighth innings winning, 9-6.
The Eagles also held a 13-9 advantage at the plate and four fielding errors hurt the Mounts. Starting pitcher sophomore
Devin Rivera Ozuna (2-1) tossed a career-high 6.0 innings and tied a career-best outing with five strikeouts.
Freshman
Corey Treyes went the final 2.1 innings fanning a season-high three batters for CSU.
At the plate, sophomore
Nazier McIlwain had his fifth three hit game of the season against Mount St. Mary's and scored two runs. Junior
John Bonanca had a season-high three hits and scored his sixth run of the season. Freshman
Isaiah Wilson tied a season-high with two hits and notched his second RBI of the year. Senior
Bryant Miranda had a pair of hits and junior
Andres Santana finished with a season-high two RBI.
In the first inning, sophomore
Jamar Criss reached on a throwing error by the defense scoring freshman
Allen Saar who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Junior
Brett Helmbrecht followed and RBI singled past second base scoring McIlwain who singled to left center. Junior
Caleb Duhay brought in the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly ball to right field scoring Criss.
Their next run came in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field by Saar scoring Wilson who singled through the left side. In the fifth inning, Bonanca RBI singled to left field scoring McIlwain. A bases loaded walk allowed Helmbrecht to score and then Duhay scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Wilson.
Santana had one of three Eagle hits in the seventh inning. His single to right center field scored Bonanca. The final run by CSU was in the eighth inning by sophomore
Malik White. White drew a walk, then stole second base, advanced to third on an error by the defense and then scored.
Coppin State baseball travels to Norfolk, VA for a weekend three game series with the Spartans. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22
nd at 1pm and 4pm and then a single game will conclude the series on Sunday, April 23
rd at noon.
