TOWSON, Md. – The Eagles fell 7-5 in a non-conference matchup against Towson on Wednesday, March 29
th at Schuerholz Park. Towson trailed 5-4 in the seventh inning and then rallied from behind with three runs in the eighth inning on three fielding errors by the Eagles.
Coppin State falls to 5-14 overall while Towson improves to 9-11.
The Eagles held a 5-2 lead before the Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and three runs in the eighth for a 7-5 victory. Both teams hammered out nine hits each but five crucial fielding errors doomed Coppin State.
Sophomore
Devin Rivera Ozuna made his third start of the season tossing 4.0 innings striking out five batters and walking three. Freshman relief pitcher
Joshua Hancock tossed a season-high 3.1 innings striking out one batter while freshman
Corey Treyes (0-2) was issued the loss in his fourth appearance on the mound.
Freshman infielder
Allen Saar tied a season-high with two hits, with an RBI and scored a run. Saar stole his first base of the season and recorded his second RBI as an Eagle. Junior catcher
Brett Helmbrecht also had two hits and scored a run. Junior infielder
John Bonanca drew two walks and had a two-run RBI double.
In the third inning, Saar singled up the middle followed by a single down the right field line by junior outfielder
Andres Santana. Santana stole second and Saar stole home tying the game at 1-1. Then, sophomore infielder
Nazier McIlwain RBI singled up the middle scoring Santana (2-1).
Two rookies recorded hits in the fourth inning with freshman
Isaiah Wilson singling to left center field and Treyes singling to left center in consecutive plate appearances for Coppin State. Helmbecht had his first hit in the fifth inning singling down the right field line.
Towson scored one run in the fifth inning but the Eagles quickly responded with an RBI single through the right side by Saar. Senior outfielder
Clinton Arnold scored after he was hit by a pitch and then stole second base.
Bonanca's double down the right field line in the seventh inning brought in senior infielder
Bryant Miranda and Helmbrecht. Towson once again came up with two more runs to stay within striking distance of Coppin State. In the eighth inning the Eagles fell victim to three errors that led to three runs by the Tigers. Coppin State's lead turned into a two run deficit heading into the ninth inning.
The Towson defense escaped the Eagles attack and left three on base to end the game with a 7-5 home win.
Coppin State will host Norfolk State in a weekend three game series. The Spartans and Eagles will play a double header on Saturday, April 1
st beginning at 1 p.m. and then a single game on Sunday, April 2
nd at 12 p.m.
