Baseball Continues MEAC Road Action at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – The Coppin State baseball team continues an 11 game road stretch this weekend when it travels to Delaware State for a three-game MEAC series starting on Saturday with a double header at 12 p.m. (ET). All three games of the series will have live stats at dsuhornets.com/livestats.

Coppin State Quick Hits
Coppin State is 3-12 overall on the season after a midweek loss on the road to Georgetown on Wednesday. The Eagles are off to a 2-1 MEAC record after last weekend's road series against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
  • Nazier McIlwain ranks 7th in the MEAC in batting average (.362) and is 7th in on base percentage (.456). McIlwain leads the Eagles in batting average, slugging percentage (.468), runs scored (10), hits (17), RBIs (11) and total bases (22).
  • Brett Helmbrecht is 12th in the MEAC in batting average (.353). Helmbrecht leads the Eagles in on base percentage (.511) and ranks second in batting average, slugging percentage (.382) and walks (10).
  • Andres Santana is tied for 2nd in stolen bases with seven while Bryant Miranda is ranked 7th. Santana leads the Eagles in sacrifice bunts (3), stolen bases while ranking second in runs scored (9), hits (14), total bases (15) and at bats (51). Miranda leads the team in at vats (58), stolen base percentage (1.000) and doubles (2).
 
 
Week in Review
Coppin State went 2-1 this past week with a double header sweep against Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday and a non-conference loss to Georgetown on Wednesday.
 
  • On Monday, senior outfielder Clinton Arnold combined for four hits and five stolen bases as Coppin State won both games of the double header on the final day of the weekend series, 7-3 and 4-2 while stealing a season-high seven bases.
  • On Wednesday, the Eagles recorded a season-high three sacrifice fly outs against Georgetown in a 14-4 setback. Sophomore infielder Nazier McIlwain tied a season-high with three hits at the plate against the Hoyas.
 
Scouting Delaware State
Delaware State enters the weekend with a 6-10 record after a shutout loss to Navy on Wednesday (18-0). Offensively, the Hornets are led by Darnell Maisonet who is hitting a team-best .327 with 18 hits, 10 runs score, three doubles and a home run. On the mound Lane DeLeon leads the team with a 3.05 ERA with a record of 1-1. Garrett Lawson has tossed a team-high 25.0 innings and a team-best 15 strikeouts.
 
The Eagles vs. the Hornets
Coppin State has faced Delaware State 160 previous times, posting a record of 46-114 against the Hornets. The Eagles lost all three road games last season in Dover and went 1-2 at home. Coppin State met with the Hornets in the MEAC Baseball Tournament where the Eagles eliminated the Hornets 15-4 on day one.

Bryant Miranda ranks 9th on the Coppin State all-time list in at bats with 496 through 15 games played this season. Miranda will look to pass Amiel Traynum (8th, 508), Ruffin Bell (7th, 516) and Eddie Wilson at No. 6 with 535 career at bats. The career leader Cecil Christwell has a total of 593 at bats as an Eagle from 1995-98.

The Eagles travel to Towson, MD for a Wednesday non-conference matchup against Towson on March 29th for a single game at 3:30 p.m. Then Coppin State will host Norfolk State in a home three game weekend series on April 1st and 2nd at Joe Cannon Stadium.
