HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State played their first home game of the 2017 season and fell in extra innings, 6-5 to Georgetown on Wednesday, February 22
nd at Joe Cannon Field. The Eagles forced the game into extra innings with a pair of ninth innings run against Georgetown.
Coppin State falls to 0-4 this season and Georgetown moves to 2-2. The Eagles used combination of four pitchers in their home opener against the Hoyas. Sophomore
Devin Rivera Ozuna made his first start of the season and freshman relief pitcher
Corey Treyes picked up his first loss.
Eight batters for Coppin State had one hit apiece. Senior infielder
Bryant Miranda and junior catcher
Brett Helmbrecht both recorded doubles while junior outfielder
Andres Santana belted in two RBIs. Sophomore infielder
Erik Crossman had two runs scored with a trio of freshmen in Treyes,
Isaiah Wilson and
Cole Gerula all had one run scored.

Jahmon Taylor and freshman
Jacob Lewis totaled eight strikeouts. Taylor went 3.0 innings fanning four Hoyas and both Rea and Lewis struck out two batters each.
The Eagles trailed 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs before their rally took place. Infielder
Cole Gerula singled to right center field and then Treys singled down the left field line advancing Gerula to third base. Next, Helmbrecht was hit by a pitch that loaded the bases full of Eagles.
Georgetown gave up a bases loaded walk with junior outfielder
Caleb Duhay at the plate trimming the deficit to 5-4. With the bases still loaded, the Hoyas proceeded with a wild pitch that sent Treyes home tying the ballgame up at 5-5.
In the extra inning, Georgetown took a 6-5 lead on an RBI single to the infield. When the Eagles went to bat in the bottom of the tenth
Bryant Miranda blasted a double to right-center field, but that was all the offense the Eagles produced falling to the Hoyas, 6-5.
Georgetown got off to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Hoyas had three hits leading to a pair of runs with addition of a Coppin State defensive fielding error. In the third inning, Coppin State cut into the Hoyas lead with single base hits by Crossman and Santana. Crossman singled to shortstop, then stole second base and finally scored on an RBI single by Santana to right field.
In the sixth inning, the Hoyas committed a pair of fielding errors that led to Coppin State tying the game at 2-2. Crossman led off the inning and reached on an error by the first baseman. The Eagles run came on an RBI double by Santana scoring Crossman from second base.
Coppin State will host Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, March 1
st at 3 p.m. for their next game at Joe Cannon Stadium.
