Eagles Host Wildcats on Homecoming This Saturday

Coppin State (5-17, 5-5) plays their second out of three consecutive home games inside the Physical Education Complex with a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman (12-9, 8-1) at 2:00 p.m. The two teams met last month on Jan. 9th with the Wildcats topping the Eagles 71-52 in Daytona Beach, FL. Coppin State leads the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman 30-27 but lost their last three games against the Wildcats in the series.
                FIRST MEETING OF THE SEASON: Senior guard Keena Samuels set a new career-high with 27 points in a 71-52 loss at Bethune-Cookman. Samuels scored 16 first half points and finished with a career-best ten made field goals. The Eagles tied a season-high with 13 steals paced by red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas' four steals. The Wildcats made 24 free-throws shooting 77% from the charity stripe.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles suffered a 58-46 home loss to North Carolina Central on Monday. Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas finished with a team-high 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Three Eagles finished in double figure scoring behind Lucas' team-high 12 points on five made shots from the field. Graduate Vanessa Neal scored 11 points and graduate Tiara Goode added ten points with seven rebounds. Freshmen Chance Graham recorded a game-high nine rebounds while both junior Candice Beverly and sophomore Alexis Taylor each had a pair of blocked shots.

Coppin State ranks fifth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in turnover margin (-0.45), sixth in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.295) and seventh in both assist/turnover ratio (0.5) and steals (8.3).
  • Genesis Lucas is 5th in scoring (12.7), 2nd in assists (4.3), 3rd in steals (2.4), 3rd in assist/turnover ratio (1.1), 3rd in minutes played (35.0), 9th in free-throw percentage (.732), 11th in 3-point field goal percentage (.292) and 13th in 3-point field goals made (28)
  • Keena Samuels is 9th in scoring (12.2), 5th in free-throw percentage (.750) and 6th in steals (1.9)
  • Tiara Goode is 26th in scoring (9.6), 4th in 3-point field goals made (41), 10th in minutes played (32.6) and 13th in 3-point field goal percentage (.279)

ALL-TIME ASSIST LIST
Genesis Lucas is currently ranked in fourth place in school history in career assist totals with 294. As a sophomore she dished out 130 and as a freshman 82. Now in her third season she has 82 thus far, just passing No. 5 Sesalie Johnson (283). Shalamar Oakley is next on the list at No. 3 with 326 career assists and Amber Griffin is No. 2 all-time at 370.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Bethune-Cookman won 8 of their last 9 games this season and are currently the top team in the MEAC. The Wildcats lead the conference in defensive rebounds (28.7) and are on a current 3 game win streak. Kailyn Williams is their top scorer ranking 19th in the MEAC in scoring at 10.2 ppg. She leads the conference in blocked shots (4.2) and is second in field goal percentage (.480) and 6th in rebounding (7.4). In the team's January meeting, Ashanti Hunt scored a team-high 18 points, Kendra Cooper and Armani Walker both scored ten points each.
 
UP NEXT
Coppin State rounds out their previous three game home slate on Monday, February 13th at 5:30 p.m. against the Hornets of Delaware State University. The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Hornets 39-20 and have won the last five games dating back to the 2010-11 season.
