DOVER, Del. – Asia Stennis recorded a career-high 21 kills to lead the Coppin State University volleyball team to a 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 18-25, 25-22) victory at Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Delaware State (3-22, 3-6 MEAC) on Friday night at Memorial Hall.
A sophomore from East St. Louis, Ill., Stennis also hit a season-best .405 on the night, committing just four errors on 42 swings. Stennis also had a solid night defensively with eight digs and a block.
Other than Stennis, Coppin (4-23, 4-6 MEAC) had a well-balanced offensive attack as
Angel Jamerson tallied nine kills,
Christa Johnson recorded eight and
Dominique Madarang finished with seven as the squad hit .246 for the match. Madarang also tallied a career-high 44 assists.
On the defensive end, senior
Glorines Rosado led the Eagles with 17 digs while
Marlena Guice and
Bailee Jackson both reached double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. Rosado, one of the nation's leaders in aces, finished with four on the night.
In the opening set, the Coppin got out to an early 2-0 lead on kills by Stennis but the Hornets responded and at one point held a seven point lead. With Delaware State ahead 19-13, Coppin went on a six-point run to tie the frame and faced a match point at 24-21. A pair of kills by Stennis and one by
Elanna Nellis tied the set at 24 before a DSU ball-handling error followed by a kill by Madarang gave CSU the win.
Coppin led from start to finish in the second but Delaware State did the same in the third frame to force a fourth set which was all Eagles from the beginning as Stennis notched eight kills in the decider.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday, November 5 when they travel to Maryland Eastern Shore for a 3 pm MEAC contest.
