BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State University's women's basketball team will take on Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, November 18 as the Mountaineers travel to the charm City for the Eagles home opener. Tipoff from the Physical Education Complex is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
Coppin enters its home opener at 0-2 with losses at third-ranked Baylor as well as Stephen F. Austin this past week.
Despite the losses, the Eagles had several bright spots with redshirt senior
Genesis Lucas leading the way, averaging 21.5 points, four rebounds and four assists in those two games. The point guard from Brandywine, Md., was a First Team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection a year ago and is nearing the 1,000 point plateau for her career.
Also standing out for Coppin is sophomore center
Chance Graham, last year's MEAC Rookie of the Year. Recording a career-high 19 points to go with 11 rebounds against the Bears, Graham matched that rebounding output against the Lady Jacks two days later while finishing a point shy of her second-straight double-double.
Senior
Candice Beverly also dished out a career-high six assists at Baylor and followed up with a career-high 14 points at Stephen F. Austin while freshman
Maraiyah Smith took advantage of increased minutes against the Jacks, recording 13 points in just her second career game.
The Mount also stands at 0-2 on the year with losses at sixth-ranked Notre Dame and Xavier.
Through two games, senior
Katrice Dickson and sophomore
Ashlee White lead the way averaging 12.5 and 10.0 points, respectively. Junior
Juliette Lawless leads the squad in both rebounds (5.0) and assists per game (3.5)
The two teams separated by just over fifty miles have met eight times previously with Mount St. Mary's leading the series 5-3. Coppin and the Mount have met the last three seasons with the Mountaineers taking last year's game, 54-48 at Knott Arena despite game-high 22 points by Lucas.
