Coppin defeats crosstown rival Morgan State 3-1

Baltimore, MD - Coppin State Volleyball snapped a five game losing streak and defeated rival Morgan State 3-1 in a MEAC Northern Division conference match.  Coppin (2-21, 2-4) took the match which was filled with emotion and energy in the PEC Arena on a night that was dedicated to Coppin volleyball alumna Letica Madry who is battling stage 2 breast cancer.  The Lady Eagles who won 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, and 25-16 were led by Asia StennisMarlena Guice, Bailee Jackson and Dominique Madarang.

In the first set, Coppin fell behind 7-2 before scoring three straight points which included a kill by Valiyah Barnes from Madarang.  Barnes had an impressive 1.000 hitting percentage during the first set. Morgan (3-16, 2-4) increased their lead to 10-6, but Coppin battled back to within one with the score at 11-10 in Morgan's favor. The Bears began to distance themselves and began an 8-2 run which now set the score at 19-12.  Coppin would begin it's own run and comeback by taking advantage of Morgan errors and Glorines Rosado service ace.  Coppin's Bailee Jackson would tie the score at 21 after serving an ace.  Morgan would take the lead one more time , 23-22 before the Lady Eagles would score the next three to take the first set 25-23.

The second set was very similar to the first which saw six tie scores and four lead changes.  Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles, it was Morgan that would benefit with the set win.  Morgan never looked back after they took a 7-6 lead and went on to take the set 25-18.

In the third set, it remained tight as the first set as the drama played out at the very end of the set.  Coppin would take a 22-21 lead after a kill by Stennis from Madarang.  Coppin would take the set after a Rosado service ace and two more kills by Stennis from Madarang to pull one set away from a victory.

The final set saw Coppin take the lead 17-11 after a Christa Johnson and Guice kill from Madarang and two back to back service aces also by Madarang.  The Lady Eagles continued to benefit from Morgan errors to take the final set 25-16.

Coppin travels to Howard University on Sunday for a 3pm match before returning home for the final home games of the season against Norfolk State (Wed., Oct. 27) and Hampton (Sunday, Oct. 29).
