Washington, DC - The Lady Eagles dropped three straight sets to Howard University in a MEAC Northern Division match 11-25, 18-25, 16-25. The loss dropped Coppin to 2-22 overall and 2-5 within the conference. Howard improves to 10-13 and 6-1 in the conference.
Coppin's .075 hitting percentage was no match for Howard's .375 as the Lady Eagles didn't play with the same energy as recently as Friday. In the first set, Coppin was down one point after a
Dominique Madarang service ace to make the score 4-3, Howard. The stampede would begin as the score quickly jumped to 14-5 and then 20-9 in the Bison's favor. Coppin would muster two separate kills by
Valiyah Barnes and
Christa Johnson to bump the Lady Eagles to 11. From there, Howard would close out the set scoring five straight.
In the second set, Coppin would hold leads at 6-5, and 11-10 after an
Asia Stennis kill from Madarang. Howard then go on a 7-1 run to take the lead and make the score 17-12. Coppin would bounce back and outscore Howard 6-4, to make the score 21-18, Howard. The three point deficit would be the closest Coppin would get as the Bison would finish the set winning the remaining points.
Howard continued to dominate the match as they started the third set up 9-3, before a
Bailee Jackson kill from Madarang started a short point burst that included two kills from Stennis. With the score 10-6 in Howard's favor, the Bison would score twice before the Lady Eagles would go on their last scoring spree. Coppin would out score Howard 5-2 taking advantage of multiple Bison errors to make the score 14-11 in Howard's favor. The Lady Eagles would scatter five additional points the remainder of the match, with four of them coming from Bison errors.
The Lady Eagles return to the nest on Friday, October 27 against Norfolk State at 7pm which is Senior Night.
Jennifer Gell, Valiyah Barnes,
Glorines Rosado and
Bailee Jackson will be recognized before the start of the match.
