TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coppin State (1-12, 1-0) continues MEAC play this weekend with a road swing through the Florida schools. Up first is a date with Florida A&M (2-12, 0-1) on Saturday, Jan. 7 2017. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET. Then the Eagles will return their attention to a road game at Bethune-Cookman (5-8, 1-0) on Monday, Jan. 9. Coppin State trails the all-time series 23-19 vs. Florida A&M, having split the last four meetings in the series including a pair of losses in the Lawson Center. Last year the Rattlers posted a 79-73 win at FAMU (Jan. 18, 2016). The Eagles last won at the Al Lawson Center, 54-50, on Jan. 19, 2009.
COPPIN STATE's LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles opened up MEAC play with a huge 70-54 victory over South Carolina State on Wednesday in the Physical Education Complex. Coppin State ended a 12 game losing streak to begin the season recording team season-highs in points (70), assists (17), field goals made (28) and field goal percentage (.424) against the Bulldogs.
Genesis Lucas led three Eagles in scoring with a game-high 24 points and a season-high eight assists.
EAGLES AMONGST THE MEAC RANKINGS
- Genesis Lucas ranks in the MEAC top-10 in seven different categories; seventh in the conference in scoring (13.1), third in assists (3.7), fourth in steals (2.4), fifth in free-throw percentage (.762), fourth in steals (2.4), sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.340), three-point field goals made (1.7), assist/turnover ratio (0.9) and in minutes played (33.9) per game.
- Keena Samuels ranks 16th in scoring (10.5), 15th in field goal percentage (.349), 12th in free-throw percentage (.711) and seventh steals (1.8).
- Tiara Goode is 28th in scoring (8.8) and tied for tenth in three-point field goals made (1.5).
- Chance Graham is seventh in rebounding (7.4), 14th in blocked shots (0.8), fourth in offensive rebounds (3.3) and 11th in defensive rebounds (4.1).
- Oluwaseun Adeniji is tied for 11th in blocked shots (0.8).
LUCKY LUCAS
Genesis Lucas is averaging 22.0 points, 5.7 assists and 2.0 steals in her last three games against North Carolina, UMBC and South Carolina State. Lucas scored a career-high 26 points at UMBC and then followed that up with her third 20+ scoring effort of the season with 24 points in a win vs. South Carolina State. She connected on 23-of-52 field goals, 9-of-18 three-pointers and 11-of-12 free-throws during the stretch.
FIRST WIN OF THE 2016-17 SEASON
The Eagles won their first game of the 2016-17 season at home against South Carolina State by 16 points (70-54). The victory marks first year head coach
DeWayne Burroughs' first win as a Division I head coach as well as his first at Coppin State.
BEVERLY NETS CAREER-HIGH VS. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE
Candice Beverly recorded a career-high ten points leading the Eagles bench scoring in their win over South Carolina State. In the final quarter of play, Beverly caught fire hitting all four of her shots from the field recording ten points in the quarter. Her aggressive play anchored the rest of her team as CSU outscored SCSU 23-16 in the fourth and went on to win 70-54.
ABOUT THE RATTLERS
Florida A&M (2-12) last played on Wednesday. FAMU lost on the road to Howard, 72-58 in their MEAC opener. They are 1-4 at home this season and have one averaging double figure points per game. Florence Ouattara leads with 10.1 points per game while Shakerrya Morrison averages a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Florence ranks 17
th in the conference in scoring and fifth in steals (2.0). Morrison ranks 29
th in scoring (8.7), fourth in rebounds (7.8) and sixth in field goal percentage (.433).
ALL-TIME CSU ASSISTS LIST
Genesis Lucas climbs up to seventh in school history in career assist totals with 249. As a sophomore she dished out 130 and as a freshman 82. Now in her third season she has 36 thus far, and will look to pass No. 6 Liesha Mitchell (266) next.
MILESTONES
- Senior Keena Samuels has 188 career rebounds and is currently 12 rebounds shy of 200 total.
- Red-shirt junior Genesis Lucas has 197 rebounds and is currently three boards shy of 200 in her career.
- Freshman Chance Graham has collected 96 rebounds in her rookie season and is now 4 boards shy of 100.
