Eagles Host Bulldogs Wednesday in MEAC Opener

The Eagles open up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play hosting South Carolina State this Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. (ET). Coppin State leads the all-time series against South Carolina State 31-29, with the Bulldogs taking both games last season in Orangeburg on Feb. 6 (88-83) and then in Norfolk at the 2016 MEAC Basketball Tournament 90-80) on Mar. 10. Wednesday's game will mark Coppin State's third home game of the 2016-17 campaign where they are 1-2 in the Physical Education Complex.
                EAGLES VERSUS BULLDOGS: Prior to two losses last season to South Carolina State, the Eagles won seven straight games from the 2009-10 season up until the 2014-15 season. CSU head coach, Michael Grant is 1-2 against SCSU. Grant won his first meeting back on Jan. 13, 2014 at home 77-74.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Eagles allowed the fifth highest opponent scoring total of the season in an, 87-49 loss at Mount St. Mary's. The Mount draining 16 three-pointers on 64% shooting from behind the arc. Mount St. Mary's also dished out 24 assists hitting 32-of-47 shot attempts from the field on 68% which were also CSU opponent highs. Coppin State finished with their fourth lowest scoring total and tied season-lows from three-point range going 2-for-15 against the Mount.
 
SHIVERS LEADS EAGLE SCORING IN NON-CONFERENCE FINALE
Senior Keith Shivers was the only Eagle to net double figures with ten points on 5-of-10 made shots from the field at Mount St. Mary's. He added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists in 25 minutes of action. Senior Terry Harris Jr. scored eight points and tied a team-high with seven rebounds. Senior Chas Brown made his Eagle debut scoring seven points knocking down a CSU team-high 3-of-5 free-throws and collected seven rebounds. Defensively, Brown led the Eagles with three steals as Coppin State finished with their second highest steal effort of the season with nine totaled. Freshman Dejuan Clayton added seven points in a team-high 31 minutes played rounding out the Eagles top performers.
 
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE
Currently in his fourth season as South Carolina State's head coach, Murray Garvin has guided the Bulldogs to a 3-10 mark this season, following SCSU's 89-85 loss at Jacksonville on Saturday. Two Bulldogs are averaging double-digit scoring led by Eric Eaves' 16.1 points per game. He ranks sixth in MEAC scoring and fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.452). Tashombe Riley is averaging 11.0 points per game and leads the team with 4.7 rebounds per game.
 
MADE THREE-POINTERS STREAK CONTINUES FOR EAGLES
Coppin State has made at least one three-point field goal in 200 consecutive games over the past seven seasons; which is the current longest streak in the nation. The last time the Eagles were unable to register a made three-pointer in a game was back on Feb. 22, 2010 at Delaware State (0-8).
 
EAGLE LEADERS AMONGST NATION & MEAC
Coppin State ranks 50th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (12.87) and 75th in three-point field goal attempts (345). The Eagles are second in the MEAC in three-point field goal attempts, free-throw attempts (297) and total rebounds (529). They are third in offensive rebounding and fourth in free-throws made (186) and total rebounds per game (35.27).
Individually, junior guard Tre' Thomas ranks 30th in the MEAC in scoring (9.9) and ninth in three-point field goals made per game (2.1). Senior Terry Harris Jr. ranks fourth in free-throw percentage (.839), ninth in defensive rebounding (4.1), and 13th in rebounding (5.4) with junior Blake Simpson ranking eighth in offensive rebounding (2.2) and tied for 15th with 5.1 rebounds per game. Senior Joshua Treadwell ranks eighth in free-throw percentage at .762.
 
MILESTONES
Senior Terry Harris Jr. (468) needs 32 points to reach 500 career points as an Eagle. He is also 18 rebounds (282) shy of 300 career rebounds.
Senior Joshua Treadwell has scored 470 career points in two seasons at Coppin State. He needs 30 more points to reach 500 total.
Sophomore Lucian Brownlee (193) needs seven points to eclipse the 200 point total in his career.
 
UP NEXT
Coppin State continues Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a pair of road games at Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. The Eagles travel to Tallahassee for their first game against the Rattlers on Saturday, Jan. 7th at 4 p.m. and then will face the Wildcats on Monday, Jan. 9th at 7:30 p.m. in Daytona Beach.
