BALTIMORE, MD – In the 2016 MEAC home opener, Coppin State fell 3-2 (22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, 4-15) to Norfolk State University on Friday, Sept. 23 inside the PEC Auxiliary Gym.
Two Eagles reached double figure kills as Coppin State finished with 47 team kills on .112 attack percentage. Norfolk State also had 47 team kills but held a slight advantage (.139) in attacks. The teams battled with the Spartans taking sets one (25-22), three (25-17) and set five (15-4).
Coppin State was victorious in sets two and four where they forced the Spartans into 16 combined errors. Junior
Bailee Jackson had five kills and freshman
Asia Stennis had four kills anchoring the Eagles to a 25-15 win in the second set. Jackson continued her strong play in set four with three kills along with junior
Guro Froberg with the Eagles tying the match at 2-2 after a 25-19 victory.
In the fifth and deciding set, Norfolk State dominated with eight kills while Coppin State only had one. The CSU offense struggled with 12 attacks and five errors. Sophomore
Marlena Guice had the only point and added a pair of digs as CSU dropped the set (15-4).
Coppin State falls to 0-15 while Norfolk State improves to 2-10.
Asia Stennis finished with a season-best .275 attack percentage posting 15 kills against the Spartans. She also tied a season-high two assists in the match.
Bailee Jackson had 13 kills hitting the double figure kill mark for the fourth time this season. Jackson added seven digs and a service ace.
Guro Froberg collected a season-high 18 digs and was third on the offense with nine kills.
Freshman setter
Dominique Madarang tied a season-best with two assisted blocks and paced the Eagles with 36 assists and four kills. This was her fourth match with 30+ assists and her 13
th double figure assist match of the season.
Junior
Valiyah Barnes recorded a service ace, had three blocks and five kills.
Defensively, three Eagles finished with a trio in double-digit digs led by Froberg (18). Stennis had 11 digs and junior
Glorines Rosado had 12 digs and added four assists.
Coppin State returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25 with a home match against Hampton at 3 p.m.
