Madarang’s Double-Double Comes up Short in Loss to Bucknell

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Coppin State fell in a tough 4-1 (26-24, 25-27, 28-26, 25-23) heart breaker to Bucknell on Friday night, Sept. 2 in the Palubo Center. Freshman Dominique Madarang recorded her first career double-double with 43 assists and 24 digs against the Bison as several Eagles posted season-best performances.

The Eagles (0-5) and the Bison (2-2) both battled to the brink with all sets decided by a close two point margin. Coppin State had their best outing with season-highs in kills (58), attack percentage (.199), assists (53), digs (78) and blocks (9.0).

The offensive explosion by the Eagles was paced by Dominique Madarang. Madarang had 43 assists, 24 digs, and three service aces against Bucknell. Her strong play led to Coppin State tallying double-digit kills in all sets including 18 in set two. Despite their fifth loss of the season, the Eagles are showing progress with their young group.

Their offensive attack featured a trio of Eagles with double figures in kills led by junior Bailee Jackson.

Jackson shined with a career-high 21 kills amounting to 21.5 points. She had eight kills in the first set and then carried CSU to a 27-25 win in set two with seven kills.

Freshman Asia Stennis and junior Guro Froberg both finished with 12 kills apiece which were also season-highs. Stennis was a force at the net with four blocks assisted while Froberg added three blocks assisted and 17 digs. Freshman Kennedy Curtis had a breakthrough match with eight kills tying a team-high with a .353 attack percentage and seven blocks.

Defensively, four Eagles finished with double-digit digs led by Madarang. Junior Glorines Rosado had 11 digs and junior Jennifer Gell finished with a season-high ten digs.

Coppin State returns to action with a pair of matches on Saturday, Sept. 3 on the campus of Robert Morris. The Eagles take on Robert Morris at 11 a.m. and then St. Francis (Pa.) at 4 p.m.
