Volleyball Suffers Heartbreaking Setback to Kent State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – In their first five set match of the season, Coppin State's volleyball team came up short 3-2 (25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 25-13, 15-10) in their final non-conference match of the season against Kent State on Saturday, Sept. 17 in Wetherby Gym.

Freshman setter Dominique Madarang was named to her second straight All-Tournament honors after earning a spot on the Comfort Inn-Vitational Tournament Team representing Coppin State.

Coppin State tied the match with a thrilling 25-18 win in set two. The Eagles forced the Golden Flashes into seven errors and held them to only ten kills. CSU's offense had 14 kills paced by the duo of juniors Valiyah Barnes and Bailee Jackson. Jackson had five kills, Barnes added four while freshman Dominique Madarang garnered 11 assists in the set.

In the third set, the Eagles kept it going with an efficient .308 percentage at the net. Jackson got off six kills to lead the offense once more, but Coppin State's defense at the net was key. The Eagles had three team blocks in the third set; freshman Kennedy Curtis had a solo and an assisted block while freshman Asia Stennis, Jackson and Barnes each assisted on a block.

Kent State trailed Coppin State (20-14) after a kill by Madarang and then rallied off four straight points before ultimately tying the match (22-22). The Eagles hopped back on top (23-22) after great interior play by Barnes and Stennis with a block. Madarang had the 24th point of the set on a kill and an attack error by the Golden Flashes propelled the Eagles to victory (25-23) in set three.

Facing defeat Kent State responded in set four with a 25-13 win. The Eagles committed six errors and KSU only had one with 12 kills. In the fifth and final set the Eagles could not get over the hump and pull out their first victory of the year. The Golden Flashes escaped with a 15-10 win.

This was the Eagles first five-set match of the season. Their .160 attack percentage of the match was their third highest of the season and the 55 kills was their second best effort.

Jackson finished with her second highest kill amount of the season against Kent State with 18. She also had a career-high 59 total attacks at the defense.

Madarang recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 40 assists and 16 digs. She finished with a career-high six kills on 14 attacks while botching her second highest assist (40) total of the year.

Barnes recorded a season-best 10 kills on 23 attacks posting a .261 attack percentage.

Defensively, junior Glorines Rosado carried the load with 18 digs while tying a career-high with six assists.

The Eagles return to action with a home opener against the Spartans of Norfolk State on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
