MOREHEAD, Ky. – Freshman
Dominique Madarang notched her fourth double-double of the year with 20 assists and 11 digs against Morehead State. MSU downed the Eagles 3-1 (25-22, 14-25, 25-11, 25-17) in the first game of the Comfort Inn-Vitational on Friday, Sept. 16 in Wetherby Gym.
The Eagles (0-12) came out in set two strong taking a 4-1 early lead. Miscues by Morehead State (4-7) and a pair of kills by junior
Guro Froberg sparked Coppin State after a disappointing 25-22 loss in set one. Froberg posted five kills in set two while freshmen
Kennedy Curtis,
Asia Stennis, and junior
Bailee Jackson all had two kills each. Overall, the Eagles finished with 11 kills and two errors holding Morehead State to nine kills and nine errors in a 25-14 victory. Coppin State's attack percentage risen to .333 while Morehead State's dropped to .000.
Stennis' kill brought the match score to 15-8 in favor of the Eagles. Morehead State went on to cut the deficit to five (15-10) with consecutive kills, but the short MSU run ended as Froberg and Curtis began to play aggressive. The CSU duo combined for the final five kill attacks in the set as the Eagles tied the match 1-1.
The momentum quickly shifted back to Morehead State in the final two sets with the Eagles struggling with only six kills and 12 errors. Coppin fell into a slump in the third set with costly errors and very few attacks. All six kills came in the fourth set as Morehead State closed the match out with a 25-11 win in set three followed by a 25-17 victory in set four.
Coppin State registered seven blocks against Morehead State which is their second highest total of the season. Curtis had five including four assisted while Froberg added three assisted blocks.
Froberg paced the offense with eight kills and a service ace. Jackson added seven kills, 11 digs, a service ace and a block assisted. Stennis finished with four kills and seven digs while Curtis had three kills.
Junior
Glorines Rosado was one of three Eagles in double figures defensively with ten digs and Dominque Madarang finished with 20 of CSU's 21 team assists.
This was freshman setter
Dominique Madarang's tenth match of the season with double-figure assists. She also hit double-figure digs for the fourth time recording her fourth double-double of the season.
Coppin State returns to action later on today at 4:30 p.m. against Montana in the Comfort Inn-Vitational.
