Spartans Complete 3-Game Series Sweep Against Eagles

NORFOLK- Two Coppin State Eagles recorded multi-hit afternoons in their road double header against Norfolk State University on Sunday, April 24 at Marty L. Miller Field in Norfolk, VA.

 

Coppin State (9-30, 6-12 MEAC) fell 2-0 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

 

Senior infielder Colin Dower and freshman infielder Nazier McILwain led the Eagles with two hits and a run in the double header, both registering a hit in each game.

 

In game one, McILwain singled up the right center to lead off the first inning for the Eagles.

 

Senior outfielder Darien Percell added Coppin's second hit with a double to right field in the top of the second inning.

 

Dower singled to right center in the top of the seventh inning and freshman catcher Malik White singled to left center for the Eagles final hit in the ninth inning.

 

The Spartans scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on for the 2-0 victory.

 

Freshman starting pitcher Devin Sutorius led Coppin tossing six innings and fanning four batters.

 

Freshman relief pitcher Jahmon Taylor struck out two batters and surrendered one hit in two innings pitched.

 

In the final game of the doubleheader, McILwain had a dose of déjà vu, singling to right center in the opening inning of play.

 

The Spartans scored one run on two hits in the bottom of the first inning claiming an early 1-0 lead.

 

Coppin State answered in the top of the fifth inning scoring one run on two hits to match Norfolk State.

 

Freshman catcher John O'Dwyer led off the inning with a single to left field and followed by stealing second base.

 

Then freshman outfielder Andrew O'Dwyer slapped an RBI single to center field, bringing home his twin brother John O'Dwyer to tie the game at 1-1.

 

Norfolk State responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Spartans took the series with a 4-1 win.

 

Colin Dower singled to third base in final inning for CSU.

 

Freshman pitcher Aaron Rea went all six innings for the Eagles and retired one batter.

 

Coppin State will continue its road schedule with a matchup against UMBC on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Field in Baltimore, MD. ?
