DOVER- Senior outfielder
George Dragon crushed his fifth home run of the season in the closing game of Coppin's weekend road series against Delaware State on Sunday, April 17 at Soldier Filed in Dover, DE.
The Hornets squeaked by the Eagles for a 10-9 victory.
Dragon finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Senior
Colin Dower added three hits, three RBIs and scored one run for CSU.
Freshman catcher
Malik White led off the top of the second inning with a single to left field for Coppin's first hit of the afternoon.
Colin Dower picked up his first hit with a single up the middle to close out the second inning for the Eagles.
Delaware State poured in six runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 6-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, junior infielder
Bryant Miranda led off with bunt single down the third base line.
On the next at bat, freshman
Erik Crossman reached base on an error by the third baseman, advancing Miranda to second.
George Dragon registered the Eagles first score of the game with an RBI single to center field, scoring Miranda.
Then freshman infielder
Jamar Criss brought home Crossman with a sacrifice fly to left field as the Eagles finished the inning down 6-2.
Colin Dower doubled to right center for his second hit of the afternoon and CSU's only hit of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning,
George Dragon blasted a solo homer over the right field wall for the first of four runs scored by the Eagles in the inning.
Freshman designated hitter Nazier McIlwain followed with a single up the middle and
Jamar Criss added a single through the left side.
After an
Andrew O'Dwyer walk.
Colin Dower slammed a three run RBI double into center field, scoring McIlwain, Criss and O'Dwyer as the Eagles tied the game at 6-6.
George Dragon was walked to begin the top of the sixth inning.
Dragon scored on a
Jamar Criss RBI single through the right side as Coppin took a 7-6 lead to end the top of the sixth inning.
The Hornets responded by taking a 9-7 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
But the Eagles would tie the game up again with two runs scored in the top of the seventh inning.
Colin Dower reached base on a fielder's choice and then freshman outfielder Devin Rivera-Ozuna singled through the right side for his first hit of the game.
Bryant Miranda followed with an RBI single through the left side, bringing home Dower.
Rivera-Ozuna scored the Eagles tying run on a throwing error by the second baseman.
The Hornets scored one run in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim a 10-9 victory over the Eagles.
Freshman pitcher
Devin Sutorius led CSU tossing 5.0 innings and fanning six batters.
Freshman
Jahmon Taylor added two strikeouts for the Eagles.
Coppin State will return home for a midweek matchup against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday, April 20. The game will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium.
