Eagles Fall to Akron, 87-63

AKRON – Coppin State men's basketball suffered an 87-63 non-conference road loss to Akron on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016.

Coppin State (0-11) shot a season-high 47% from behind the three-point arc while tying a season-best on 25 made shots in their tenth road game of the season. Akron led the entire way shooting 56% from the field (29-51) and 46% (12-26) from long range. The Zips also outrebounded the Eagles 40-24 and only allowed ten total free-throw attempts by Coppin State.

Senior Keith Shivers led the Eagles in scoring for the third time this season in both points and rebounds with 13 and six, respectively. He had nine points in the second half and made 5-of-14 field goals, 2-for-2 at the free-throw line, with a made three-pointer.  

Freshman Dejuan Clayton was the other Eagle scoring in double-figure leading the bench with 12 points. The CSU bench outscored the Akron bench 29-22. Clayton recorded his first block of season and was 50% from the floor on 5-of-10 made shots from the field. Sophomore Lucian Brownlee added eight points knocking down a pair of three-pointers in the first half and senior Joshua Treadwell added five points in his first game of the season in a reserve role.

Coppin State shot 47% from three-point range with eight made against the Zips. Junior Tre' Thomas made a three-pointer finishing with eight points and senior Terry Harris Jr. scored all seven of his points in the first half.

Akron finished with five in double figure scoring led by Jimond Ivey's game-high 20 points. Ivey added five rebounds and five assists while Kwan Cheatham Jr. recorded 12 rebounds.

Coppin State plays their 11th road game of the season on Saturday, Dec. 10 at Buffalo (2 p.m.). The Eagles defeated Buffalo in their only meeting ever on the hardwood on Jan. 9, 1993 (69-52).
