Hampton Downs Coppin State 3-0 in MEAC Volleyball

HAMPTON, Va. – Coppin State volleyball had a pair finish with double figure kills in a 3-0 defeat to Hampton University on Sunday, Oct. 23rd in Holland Hall. Freshman Asia Stennis had a team-high 12 kills to lead the Eagles in their final road match of the regular season.

The Eagles drop to 2-21 on the year and 2-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) while the Pirates improve to 5-15 and 4-5 in the MEAC. HU swept (25-17, 25-21, 27-25) the final meeting between the two teams after the Pirates won in five sets in their first meeting on Sept. 25th in Baltimore.

Asia Stennis recorded her fourth 10+ kill match of the year against the Pirates. She has reached double figure kills in her last three matches. In set one Stennis came up with five kills and three digs. The Eagles offense produced ten kills but struggled with eight errors. Hampton played well with 14 kills, four errors on .294 attack percentage.

Junior Guro Froberg paced the CSU offense in set two with five kills as the Eagles tallied a match-high 14 team kills. Once again the Pirates showed great discipline with only three errors on 16 total kills taking a 2-0 match lead. Freshman Dominique Madarang had 11 of 12 CSU assists and a host of Eagles finished with two digs in the set.

The teams went back and forth in set three with Hampton coming out by a close two point margin (27-25). Stennis had four kills and Froberg added three to carry the Eagles attack. Madarang went for ten more assists in the set and the Eagles came up with three team blocks. Freshman Jasmine Lougheed had two assisted blocks along with Froberg while Stennis and junior Valiyah Barnes both had one assisted block each.

Stennis posted the fifth highest attack percentage for the Eagles this season at .214. She finished with 13.5 points CSU's highest point total in a three-set match this season. Madarang's 30 assists was also the Eagles highest total assists in a three-set match in 2016. Froberg finished with ten kills and Lougheed had five kills.

Coppin State returns home to the PEC Auxiliary Gym for their final three matches of the season. The Eagles host Delaware State University on Friday, Oct.30th at 7 p.m.
